Patient Care Supervisor

PURPOSE STATEMENT

The Patient Care Supervisor (PCS) provides oversight for multiple hospital departments in the absence of unit Director/Manager.  The PCS addresses patient care, staffing, and any other issues that may arise. Supervises nurses and staff and takes administrative responsibilities as directed. Administrative responsibilities include meeting with patients and family members to discuss concerns or patient care. The ability to evaluate issues and trends, as well as address and resolve issues collaboratively with hospital executives and director/manager, is also required. The Patient Care Supervisor has some oversight of the unit staffing and proactively communicates staffing needs to the unit director/manager as needed, using professional and supervisory discretion.   These duties include providing effective distribution and utilization of personnel with emphasis on staffing for nursing areas by coordinating work schedules and shift coverage.  Leads and directs the work of others. The Patient Care Supervisor sets the example for staff members and is available to staff as a resource to de-escalate, troubleshoot and solve front-line issues.  The Patient Care Supervisor promotes teamwork and is the primary liaison between departments. These activities are carried out using sound judgment and critical thinking skills. The Patient Care Supervisor handles all these functions and makes resources available to the doctors and the patients to ensure proper functioning of the hospital.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS  

• Maintains the responsibility for the coordination of patient care within the Nursing departments and assists with specialty procedures in other Clinical departments.
• Implements patient care according to planned interventions to attain the patient’s optimal level of function and documents according to policy.
• Knowledge of the basic working processes of all patient care departments.
• Knowledge of and consistently enforces established Nursing, Human Resources, and facility policies/procedures.
• Respond to and manage emergent situations (rapid response and code situations) and escalate incidents.
• Mentorship to nursing staff.
• Communicate with providers and other care team members to ensure continuity of care.
• Conduct shift audits in a timely manner.
• Monitor patient flow including admissions, transfers, and discharges to ensure appropriate bed utilization.
• Address and resolve patient, staff, or visitor complaints and concerns.
• Demonstrates positive customer service relations.
• Routinely participates in QI projects and encourages the department to continuously improve.
• Assists co-workers as needed/requested.
• Supports the Medical Center’s Mission/Vision/Philosophy positively.
• Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
• Expected to serve as sitters as needed, following the successful completion of designated sitter education and training provided.
• Performs other essential duties as assigned.

SHIFT REQUIREMENTS

• 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.
• 3, 12-hour shifts per week.

Requirements

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS 

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing.
• Currently licensed to practice as a professional Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Missouri. 
• Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) preferred.
• Knowledge of all main functional areas of the hospital is essential.
• Current AHA or Red Cross BLS.
• Current AHA or Red Cross ACLS.
• Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or obtained within 6 months of hire. 
• Current TNCC or obtained within 6 months of hire. 
• Proficient in electronic medical record systems and computer skills. 
• Strong clinical judgement and decision making. 
• Effective in communication and conflict resolution. 
• Must be self-motivated and can work within the established policies, procedures and practices prescribed by the hospital/clinic. 
• English sufficient to provide and receive instructions/directions. 

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS 

• Must be able to sit and stand intermittent 8 to 12 hours a day. 
• Must be able to use standard office equipment, including the telephone and computer keyboard. 
• Continuously works under pressure of near 100% accuracy while meeting inflexible deadlines. 
• Continuously utilizes manual/bi-manual dexterity, near vision, speech, and hearing. 
• Frequently stands, walks, sits and utilizes eye/hand coordination and color definition. 
• Occasionally reaches above shoulder, regularly required to lift and/or carry up to 40 lbs. 
• Occasionally walks on uneven surfaces.
