Job Description:
As part of the HPE Networking sales team, you will drive the technical sales activities for a selected group of Tier 2 service provider customers in the UK. You will act as a trusted technical adviser, translate customer priorities into solution architectures and help customers modernise their networks and operations.
The opportunity: Lead the technical sales engagement for a selected set of Tier 2 service provider customers, bringing together HPE Networking capabilities across routing, switching, security, automation, assurance and cloud operations.
Successful Systems Engineers combine deep networking expertise with hands-on technical credibility, commercial awareness and the ability to communicate clearly with varied audiences. You will use the breadth of the HPE portfolio, together with partner and ecosystem capabilities, to shape solutions that address customer requirements and deliver measurable business outcomes.
The ideal candidate has strong experience with service provider networks, especially IP routing, MPLS and segment routing, and a working understanding of adjacent domains such as data centre networking, security, network automation, virtualisation and cloud. You will build trusted, long-term relationships with technical decision-makers by understanding each customer’s strategy, architecture, operational model, organisation and buying process.
AI-native operations, assurance, automation and sustainability are increasingly important in customer strategies and tenders. You should be comfortable leading discussions, presentations, demonstrations, workshops, evaluations and proof-of-concept activities in these areas, supported by HPE specialists where appropriate.
This is a UK-based role with regular customer engagement and close collaboration with Systems Engineers, Account Managers, specialists, product teams, partners and other colleagues across HPE. Travel within the UK, and occasionally internationally, will be required.
Key responsibilities:
- Own and drive the technical sales strategy and technical account plan for assigned customers, aligned with the account team and the customer’s business priorities.
- Discover and qualify customer requirements, operational challenges and desired outcomes, then translate them into clear solution architectures and value propositions.
- Design and propose HPE Networking solutions across routing, switching/DC, security, automation, assurance and cloud operations, drawing on the wider HPE portfolio and partner ecosystem when relevant.
- Engage and influence customer technology strategies through executive and technical presentations, whiteboarding, architecture workshops, demonstrations, events, evaluations and proofs of concept.
- Build, develop and maintain trusted relationships with technical decision-makers, architects, operations teams, procurement stakeholders and the partner community.
- Lead technical responses to RFI, RFP and RFQ processes, including solution compliance, high-level designs, bills of materials, risk identification and technical validation.
- Coordinate specialists and internal resources across HPE to deliver a consistent customer experience and the strongest possible technical outcome.
- Capture new customer requirements, market trends and competitive insight, and provide structured feedback to product management and business units.
- Maintain accurate opportunity and activity information, identify technical risks early and support the account team through the full sales cycle.
- Continuously develop your technical, industry and competitive knowledge, and share expertise with colleagues and customers.
Preferred qualifications and experience:
- Typically 6+ years of relevant experience with service provider networks in a technical pre-sales, Sales/Systems Engineering, consulting or network architecture role. Equivalent depth of experience is equally valued.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Relevant industry certifications, for example JNCIP/JNCIE, CCNP/CCIE, CISSP or HPE technical certifications, are beneficial but not mandatory.
- Expert-level understanding of IP routing technologies and protocols. Strong knowledge of MPLS and segment routing is essential.
- Demonstrable hands-on capability in service provider routing, with useful experience in one or more adjacent areas: data centre switching, network security, automation, network virtualisation, cloud networking or observability and assurance.
- Experience designing resilient, scalable and operationally supportable network solutions, and the ability to explain architecture choices and trade-offs clearly.
- Knowledge of network automation and programmability using technologies such as Python, Ansible, NETCONF, YANG, REST APIs, JSON and OpenConfig is desirable.
- Understanding of service provider security, DDoS protection, zero-trust principles or secure managed services is an advantage.
- Good awareness of service provider market trends and emerging use cases, including AI infrastructure, network-as-a-service, sustainability and operations automation.
- Knowledge of HPE Networking products and solutions is desirable. Strong experience with relevant competitive platforms is also valued.
- Ability to build and deliver demonstrations or proofs of concept that showcase routing, switching, assurance and automation capabilities.
- Strong written, verbal, presentation and whiteboarding skills, with the ability to communicate complex topics to audiences ranging from network engineers to senior technical and business leaders.
- Self-motivated and collaborative, able to work independently, prioritise effectively, keep multiple activities moving and perform well in a fast-paced environment.
What success looks like:
- Customers recognise you as a trusted adviser who understands both their network and their business.
- Technical strategies are clear, differentiated and aligned with customer outcomes.
- Opportunities progress with well-managed technical validation, risk and stakeholder alignment.
- You expand HPE’s relevance by connecting service provider networking requirements with the broader HPE portfolio and specialist capabilities.
- You contribute actively to the wider team through knowledge sharing, coaching and reusable technical assets.
