Job Summary

The Director, Product Design is a player-coach role: the team, the practice, and hands-on work on the most impactful product surfaces. That means user discovery, UX, UI, prototyping, and the standards that keep experiences coherent across mobile, web, and platform.

Marketing owns brand design, marketing creative, and the corporate website. This role does not. Everything here is product: what HCPs, patients, and internal users see and do in Ascend, DocUpdate, Curate, and the internal tools our teams build on, including the homegrown AI surfaces that ship inside the product org.

The Director runs discovery with users, sets the bar for craft, and manages designers as the function grows. AI is part of the job, not a side project. The team designs AI-assisted and agentic product experiences, and maintains the design framework (components, patterns, tokens, interaction rules) so it can be applied in product UI and incorporated into internal AI build tools, including Sage and other homegrown platforms.

On product teams, this role is the design partner in the triad with the product lead and engineering lead. PM experience helps but is not required. Running discovery and operating as a peer to PM and engineering is.

 

Key Responsibilities

Product Design Leadership

• Own product design across the portfolio and set the bar for the function.
• Stay hands-on on the highest-stakes surfaces when the team needs senior design depth.
• Hold released product to a consistent standard for clarity, accessibility, and workflow fit.
• Cover mobile, consumer-grade interaction where it applies, and complex health tech platform work in one practice.

User Discovery

• Plan and run user discovery with HCPs, patients, and internal users, and hold the team to the same bar on their surfaces.
• Turn research and feedback into design direction the product team can act on.
• Build durable understanding of physician and operator workflow and bring it into roadmap conversations early.
• Partner with Product on measurement so experience changes can be judged after launch.

Design System, Framework, and AI Design

• Own the product design system: components, patterns, tokens, and how they are governed in production.
• Maintain and extend the design framework so standards stay usable in code and in AI-assisted build flows, including homegrown tools the company builds on.
• Design AI-powered product experiences where the roadmap requires them: conversational flows, agent interactions, and the UX guardrails that keep those surfaces trustworthy in a regulated context.
• Partner with AI and engineering leadership on platform and builder UI so design quality does not stop at traditional product screens.
• Establish critique, review, and quality standards for the whole design team, including work on AI surfaces.

Cross-Functional Partnership

• Partner with the product lead(s) and engineering lead(s) from discovery through delivery on each scrum team.
• Represent design in product planning so experience risk and opportunity show up before build starts.
• Partner with Engineering on feasibility, implementation fidelity, and front-end delivery.
• Partner with Compliance and MLR where regulatory requirements shape product UI, including fair balance and required disclosure in the interface.

Qualifications & Experience

• 7+ years in product design with a portfolio of complex, workflow-heavy shipped products.
• Experience across mobile and web, including platform or multi-surface products.
• Health tech, life sciences, or other regulated product design experience strongly preferred.
• Track record owning a design system or framework in production, not a library that never shipped.
• Experience designing for AI-assisted, conversational, or agentic product surfaces, or equivalent platform/builder UI.
• Track record running user discovery, not only taking requirements from PM.
• Experience managing designers or standing up a small design function.
• Strong hands-on craft in interaction design, visual design, and prototyping; comfortable as a player-coach, not a manager who stepped out of the work.
• Credible partner to product and engineering leadership without needing to own the PM role.
• Product management experience is a plus, not a requirement.

Compensation and Benefits

The base salary range for this role is $180,000 - $200,000
