Job Description Summary

As a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer at MUSC, you will operate state-of-the-art imaging equipment to capture high-quality ultrasound images, aiding in the diagnosis and treatment of diverse medical conditions. Your role will involve preparing patients, assisting procedures, acquiring high-quality images, and communicating findings to the interpreting physician while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to provide precise and compassionate care to our patients.

Job Description

Responsibilities

  • Operates ultrasound equipment to obtain high-quality diagnostic images of organs, tissues, and anatomical structures.
  • Performs comprehensive sonographic examinations to identify, evaluate, and document anatomical, physiological, and pathological findings.
  • Reviews physician orders and patient instructions to ensure appropriate preparation for ultrasound examinations.
  • Performs ultrasound examinations in accordance with established protocols and physician requirements.
  • Evaluates images for quality, completeness, and diagnostic value prior to submitting for physician interpretation.
  • Documents and records examination findings and test results accurately in the appropriate systems.
  • Performs obstetric ultrasound examinations, including fetal imaging for diagnosis and detection of congenital anomalies.
  • Performs specialized ultrasound imaging for patients with high-risk obstetric indications.
  • Communicates relevant patient condition and examination findings to the OB/GYN nursing team before and after procedures, as appropriate.
  • Monitors patient condition and promotes patient safety, comfort, and privacy throughout examinations.
  • Inspects, cleans, and maintains ultrasound equipment to ensure proper operation and image quality.
  • Identifies equipment or supply needs and orders supplies as necessary to support department operations.
  • Follows established safety, infection prevention, and departmental policies and procedures.

Additional Job Description

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations:

Education: Graduation from an accredited school of Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

Experience: At least 1 year of Ultrasound/Sonography experience preferred. 

Required Registration/Certification:

• Must be registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) (S) or Certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) required.

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider

Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected. (Continuous)

Ability to match or discriminate between colors. (Continuous)

Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception. (Continuous)

Ability to be qualified physically (by medical personnel) for respirator use, initially and annually.

Must possess excellent hand to eye coordination.
