Summary of Job:

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Officer is responsible for ensuring that the workplace complies with all relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations. This role involves developing, implementing, and maintaining safety programs, conducting risk assessments, and promoting a culture of safety within the organization. The EHS Officer will work closely with management, employees, and external agencies to ensure a safe and healthy working environment.

Key Accountabilities:

Regulatory Compliance & Audits

• Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal EHS regulations
• Keep up-to-date with changes in legislation and update company policies and procedures accordingly
• Prepare and submit required reports to regulatory agencies
• Liase with State and Federal EHS authorities to ensure all necessary permits and licenses are obtained and maintained
• Conduct internal EHS audits and lead external audits

  EHS Programs & Policies

• Develop, implement, and maintain site specific and corporate EHS programs and policies
• Regularly review and update EHS policies to ensure they are current and effective
• Provide EHS guidance and support to management and employees
• Promote the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other safety measures
• Manage staff EHS compliance

Risk Assessment & Management

• Conduct regular risk assessments and hazard analyses to identify potential safety and environmental risks (including chemical and equipment risks)
• Manage SDS and associated risk assessment currency
• Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies and corrective actions.
• Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of risk control measures
• Review new products for environmental risks.

Training and Education

• Develop and deliver EHS training programs for employees and contractors (including onboarding/inductions)
• Ensure staff awareness of health, safety and environmental responsibilities
• Promote a culture of safety through ongoing education and awareness initiatives

Incident Investigation and Reporting

• Lead investigations into workplace incidents, accidents, and near-misses
• Identify root causes and development corrective actions to prevent recurrence
• Maintain accurate records of incidents and report findings to management and regulatory bodies as required
• Implement and track corrective and preventive actions (CAPA)
• Manage Event Tracking Systems (ETS) action completion

Emergency Preparedness and Response

• Develop and maintain emergency response plans and procedures
• Conduct regular emergency drills and training exercises
• Lead safety committee and site emergency planning
• Ensure regular inspection and maintenance of emergency equipment 

Environmental Management

• Monitor and manage environmental impacts of company operations
• Develop and implement programs to reduce waste, conserve resources and minimise environmental footprint
• Conduct site reviews and ensure proper handling, storage and disposal of hazardous materials
• Create and maintain Environmental Aspects & Impacts Register

Continuous Improvement

• Identify and lead EHS improvement opportunities
• Stay informed about industry best practices and emerging trends in EHS management
• Implement and track key performance indicators (KPIs) related to EHS performance

Qualifications: 

• Tertiary qualification in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Sciences or related field or equivalent experience (required)
• Working at Heights (advantageous)

Work Experience: 

• Required
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in an EHS or similar role
  • Experience in working with WorkSafe, EPA and water authorities.

• Advantageous
  • Experience in working in Defence and/or Manufacturing industry
  • Dangerous Goods Transport experience
  • Hot Work experience
  • Lock Tag Try experience

Suitability:

• Strong knowledge of Australian EHS regulations and standards
• Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Work, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Excellent oral and written communication, training and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Strong attention to detail
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
• High level of motivation and willingness to learn

Eligibility:

• Must be an Australian Citizen and can obtain and maintain an Australian security clearance
• Must satisfy police checks and employment screening verification including employment reference checks
• Must be able to access information controlled under the US International Traffic of Arms Regulation (ITAR) which in some circumstances can place limitations on persons who hold dual nationality, permanent residency or are former nationals of certain countries as per ITAR 126.1
