Description

About Sync
Sync is a Canadian company building zero-knowledge, end-to-end encrypted cloud storage and collaboration for over two million people and businesses worldwide. Unlike most of our competitors, we own and operate our own storage infrastructure rather than renting it. Our customers’ data lives on our hardware, in our racks, in Canada. That is a core part of our product promise, and it means the physical infrastructure is not a back-office concern here. It is the product.

About the role
We are hiring a Junior IT Infrastructure Technician to help maintain the JBODs, servers, and network gear in our Toronto colocation facility. This is a hybrid role based in Toronto, with regular travel to our Toronto Data Centre required to do hands-on work, and a genuinely strong entry point into storage and infrastructure engineering, you will be working directly on petabyte-scale storage systems from your first week.

You will rack and maintain hardware, replace failed drives and components, own the RMA process end to end, manage procurement, and support the day-to-day IT needs of the team. We are looking for someone early in their career who is curious about how things work and who moves toward problems instead of waiting to be assigned them. You will not be expected to arrive knowing everything. You will be expected to ask good questions, document what you learn, and take real ownership of the things you touch. Once you're ramped up, this role will also include participation in an on-call rotation.

What you will do
  • Maintain our JBOD storage enclosures: identify and replace failed drives, verify rebuilds complete cleanly, and track drive health and failure trends over time.
  • Install, cable, configure, provision and decommission servers and storage chassis in our Toronto colocation cage.
  • Diagnose and resolve hardware faults across drives, memory, PSUs, HBAs, SAS expanders, backplanes, and network components.
  • Support network infrastructure: rack and cable switches, maintain accurate port maps, and assist with configuration changes under supervision.
  • Support the team during critical situations: respond to monitoring alerts, work the relevant runbook, and help recover systems from unexpected failures.
  • Own the RMA process end to end: identify the failure, open the case with the vendor, track the shipment, install the replacement, and confirm the fix. Then make sure the inventory reflects reality.
  • Manage procurement for hardware and IT equipment, including quoting, purchase orders, receiving, and day-to-day vendor communication.
  • Maintain an accurate asset inventory covering serial numbers, warranty status, rack and slot locations, and lifecycle state.
  • Keep the cage clean and auditable through disciplined structured cabling, labelling, and cable management.
  • Handle media sanitization and secure disposal of decommissioned drives in line with our security policies.
  • Coordinate with the colocation provider on remote hands, access approvals, power and cooling questions, and scheduled maintenance windows.
  • Provide general IT support to internal staff, including laptop provisioning, account setup, and endpoint troubleshooting.
  • Write and improve runbooks so the next person can do the task without having to ask.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for incidents after an onboarding period.
What we are looking for
  • 0 to 2 years of experience in IT support, datacenter operations, or a related hands-on technical role. Co-op terms, internships, home labs, and personal projects all count.
  • A proactive mindset. You notice the drive that keeps throwing errors before it fails outright, and you raise it.
  • Real curiosity about infrastructure. You want to understand why a system behaves the way it does, not just which button restarts it.
  • Working knowledge of server and storage hardware, and comfort using hand tools in a rack environment.
  • Linux fundamentals at the command line: navigating the filesystem, reading logs with journalctl and dmesg, and using basic disk and filesystem tooling such as lsblk, smartctl and df.
  • Basic networking knowledge: IP addressing, VLANs, switching, subnetting, routing and the ability to read and maintain a cable map.
  • Care and precision around data. In a live storage environment, pulling the wrong drive matters — we need someone who checks twice before executing any task.
  • Clear written communication. A significant part of this job is leaving a good record for the next person.
  • Strong organizational habits, particularly around tracking assets, tickets, and open vendor cases.
  • Ability to work on-site in Toronto and to lift and position equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Eligibility to work in Canada.
Nice to have
  • Exposure to a colocation or datacenter environment.
  • Familiarity with SAS or SATA storage topologies, RAID or erasure coding concepts, or distributed storage systems such as ZFS or Ceph.
  • Scripting in Bash or Python to automate repetitive work such as drive health checks or inventory reconciliation.
  • Experience with out-of-band management tools such as iDRAC, iLO, or IPMI.
  • Any exposure to a switch CLI – Cisco NX-OS or IOS, HP ProCurve, or similar –even if only show commands.
  • Any exposure to monitoring and alerting tooling such as Prometheus, Grafana, Zabbix.
  • Familiarity with Containers (Docker, LXC) or with a directory and identity service for user and device management.
  • Certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, Server+, or equivalent coursework.
Perks:
  • Compensation range: $50,000 to $58,000 CAD
  • Generous WSA program
  • Best-in-the-class health benefits
  • Paid vacation with carry-over
  • Flexible Hybrid
  • Direct hands-on experience with petabyte-scale storage infrastructure that very few companies our size operate themselves.
  • A clear growth path toward storage, systems, or network engineering, with mentorship from the senior staff who built this infrastructure.
  • Budget for certifications and training.

Sync.com is an equal opportunity dedicated to building a diverse and inclusive team. We encourage applications from all qualified candidates and will accommodate applicants’ needs throughout the recruitment, assessment, and selection process. If selected to participate in the process, please inform us of the nature of any accommodation(s) that you may require.
