JOB SUMMARY

The First-Generation Student Success Mentor (FGSS Mentor) plays a vital role in supporting the engagement, and success of first-generation college students. Working collaboratively with faculty grant leads and staff, FGSS Mentors assist in event planning, student check-ins, and engagement strategies designed to enhance retention, academic progress, and a sense of belonging for first-generation students at Klamath Community College. 


This is a part-time position of no more than 15 hours per week. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific Duties: 

• Communicate with students in the first-gen cohort via email, text, or in person 

• Assist faculty leads with outreach and recruitment efforts for first-gen student programs 

• Assists with student orientation into First-Generation program 

• Support the planning, setup, and hosting of first-gen events on campus

 • Meets with students to ensure they have all the materials for the first week of term 

• Pushes student supply survey 

• Distributes books and supplies 

• Tracks student participation in program, success, and check-ins 

• Updates Excel spreadsheet (Canvas Hub Gradebook) that tracks students’ progress, markers for program acceptance, and students’ program requirements

 • Checks-in on students’ grades (provided by Support Faculty and/or Pam) and reaches out to remind students of Support Faculty, tutoring help, and other resources if needed

 • Coordinates with supervisor; Dean of Instruction, admin professional grant lead who manages requisitions, quarterly reports, etc.; other members of the FGSS grant team; and other departments on campus

 • As needed, attends FGSS grant team meetings to provide insights on students and program to help identify barriers to student success and connect students to campus resources 


General Duties and Responsibilities

 • As appropriate, refer students to other resources on campus 

 • Stay up to date on the Student Life event schedule 

 • Attend one-on-one meetings to assess progress 

 • Be familiar with KCC departments, resources, and campus event

 • Maintain professional and clear communication with students and staff 

• Promote and attend grant-related events as needed 

• Contribute to a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students 

Minimum Qualifications


Well-qualified candidates must demonstrate some or all the requirements listed below which are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability required to perform the position satisfactorily.   • Must be enrolled in at least 6 credits at the time of application and throughout employment
  • Maintain a minimum term and cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher??
  • Must be a current or previous member of the First-Generation Student Success cohort
  • Must be enrolled in at least 6 credits at the time of application and throughout employment 
  • Must be available to work on campus during scheduled shifts
  • Commitment to supporting the success of underserved, first-generation, and low-income students


Preferred Qualifications

  • Completed at least three terms of 6 credits at Klamath Community College??
  • Bilingual in English and another language (Spanish preferred)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Google apps?
    • Experience with student mentoring or event coordination
    • Knowledge of campus resources and student support services
    • Valid driver’s license??
    • Applicants must be registered for the next fall term to qualify for employment during summer term?


Physical Demands & Working Conditions


  • Frequently moving from stationary sitting positions to standing and walking?
  • Ability to lift to 20 pounds?
  • Work is performed primarily on campus in a shared office setting
