Under direction, is assigned by the City to provide services to assigned schools and community at large by performing a variety of peace officer duties involving the protection of life and property. Enforces laws and ordinances of the City, State, and Federal government. Provides assistance and protection to residents through the execution of a program of community policing that includes education and crime prevention, investigation, and suppression activities. Prepares cases and provide testimony in court proceedings on behalf of the community.

  • Patrols assigned areas to ensure security of life and property; observe situations and deter crimes at school sites, surrounding areas, and school events. 
  • Obtains information on police-related issues.
  • Responds to suspicious activities and answers emergency calls for service at assigned school sites.
  • Enforces a variety of City, county, state, and federal laws and ordinances, issue verbal warnings and citations. 
  • Pursues and apprehends suspects and requests for assistance at school sites, surrounding areas, and school events.
  • Conducts limited drug and alcohol testing. 
  • Investigates criminal activity and incidents. 
  • Investigates traffic accidents and provides traffic control in and around school sites. 
  • Restores order, protects life and property, and maintains the peace at public gatherings and in conflict situations. 
  • Conducts surveillance and searches.
  • Develops contacts and resources.
  • Develops investigative expertise, contacts, and methodology.
  • Prepares and documents investigations and daily activities and records a variety of crimes and incident reports.
  • May participate in sessions or trainings designed to promote positive behavior among students.
  • Documents school related crimes.
  • Prepares and maintains logs and records. 
  • Highly visible on and around assigned school sites and/or the community where students assemble, drive, walk or arrive onto campus property.
  • Testifies on behalf of the City or assigned school in court. 
  • Speaks to various constituencies for the Police Department and/or the school.
  • Responds to medical and fire calls, and provides emergency aid, assistance and requests additional response until arrival of an ambulance/paramedics.
  • Maintains issued, assigned, and personally provided equipment. 
  • Operates a motor vehicle and checks operational condition, identifies problems, and requests maintenance. 
  • Interacts with the public in a professional and courteous manner, answers basic questions, provides directions and responds to calls for service and assistance, and refers the public and their questions to appropriate City or school staff.
  • Enforces school district policies and rules.
  • Assist school district staff when making home visits.
  • Detains, transports, and cites truants.
  • Performs a variety of other duties as assigned.
  • May perform general law enforcement at the direction of the Chief of Police during emergency situations.

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of PC’s and related software.
  • Use of oral and written English, spelling, punctuation, and composition. 
  • Record keeping methods. 
  • Operation of standard office equipment.
  • Law enforcement terminology and concepts. 
  • Techniques for dealing with people of all socioeconomic levels under normal, hostile, and emergency situations. 
  • Safety practices and precautions pertaining to law enforcement work.

 

Skilled in:   

  • Use of oral and written English, spelling, punctuation, and composition. 
  • Statistical record keeping methods. 
  • Operation of standard office equipment.
  • Law enforcement terminology and concepts. 
  • Techniques for dealing with people of all socioeconomic levels under normal, hostile, and emergency situations. 
  • Safety practices and precautions pertaining to law enforcement work.

 

Ability to: 

  • Operate a PC and related software.
  • Maintain effective working relationships.
  • Pass an initial comprehensive background investigation, initial medical and physical examination and any subsequent examinations that may be required, and an oral interview.
  • Communicate in oral and written English. 
  • Read, understand, interpret, explain, and apply applicable laws, ordinances, policies, and regulations. 
  • Maintain cooperative relationships with representatives of other agencies, community residents and visitors, and other City employees. 

Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the requisite knowledge, skill and abilities. A typical way to obtain these would be:

  • High School Diploma or an equivalent certificate or diploma recognized by the State of California. 
  • Associate’s Degree with emphasis in criminology, law enforcement/administration of justice, political science, social or behavioral science or a related field, preferred. 
  • Maintain a valid California Driver License, with a driving record acceptable to the City. 
  • Possess a valid Certificate of Graduation from the POST Academy or acquire such certificate. 
  • Maintain a valid Basic POST certificate or obtain within one year of appointment. 
  • Maintain a valid First Aid/CPR Certificate or acquire one within one year of appointment.
  • One (1) to Two (2) years of experience in law enforcement as a peace officer with a police or sheriff department in a full time or reserve capacity, preferred. 
  • One (1) to Two (2) years experience as a security officer, assignments in security, intelligence, investigations or law enforcement in the armed forces, general clerical or technical experience in a law enforcement setting, or active participation in a law enforcement-oriented cadet program, preferred.

Reference checks, Live Scan, background investigations, psychological testing, and pre-employment physicals including drug testing are part of the employment process and background standards.
