School Resource Officer Position (SRO) at Waverly Community Schools

The Eaton County Sheriff's Office is accepting applications from qualified deputies interested in serving as the School Resource Officer (SRO) assigned to Waverly Community Schools.

The School Resource Officer serves as the Sheriff's Office representative within the school district and is responsible for providing a safe and secure learning environment while fostering positive relationships with students, staff, parents, and the community. The SRO works collaboratively with school administrators to enhance campus safety, mentor students, educate staff and students on public safety issues, and serve as a trusted law enforcement resource.

***During the summer months, the Deputy is expected to fulfill the role of a community engagement/policing Deputy.

  1. Provide a visible law enforcement presence throughout Waverly Community Schools.
  2. Respond to criminal incidents, emergencies, and safety concerns occurring on school property.
  3. Develop positive relationships with students, faculty, staff, parents, and community members.
  4. Serve as a mentor, educator, and resource for students.
  5. Present educational programs and training to students, faculty, and staff on topics such as school safety, Active Violence Response, internet safety, substance abuse prevention, traffic safety, and other public safety topics as appropriate.  Assist school administration with school safety planning, emergency preparedness, threat assessments, and crisis response planning.
  6. Coordinate with Sheriff's Office personnel, school administrators, and outside public safety agencies as necessary.
  7. Attend and provide a law enforcement presence at selected after-hours school activities and community events, including athletic competitions, school functions, parent events, and other activities as requested by Waverly Community Schools or the Eaton County Sheriff's Office.
  8. Perform other duties as assigned by the Sheriff or designee

Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum of one (1) year of satisfactory law enforcement experience.
  • Must be MCOLES certified or be eligible for recertification under MCOLES guidelines.
  • Must be in good standing with the Eaton County Sheriff's Office.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, professionalism, and discretion.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining positive working relationships with school personnel, students, parents, and Sheriff's Office staff.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, parents, and community members.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage individuals of all ages.
  • Experience in community-oriented policing, youth engagement, or school-related programs.
  • Prior experience as a Field Training Officer, instructor, or in another leadership or specialty assignment.
  • Ability to resolve conflict through de-escalation, problem solving, and sound decision-making.
  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and capable of working independently while maintaining strong partnerships with school administration and Sheriff's Office personnel.  
  • Commitment to serving as a positive role model and mentor for students.
  • Knowledge of school safety practices, emergency response procedures, and threat assessment principles is desirable.
Selection Process
Qualified applicants will participate in an interview before a selection panel.  Candidates will be evaluated on their communication skills, professionalism, problem-solving abilities, community policing philosophy, leadership qualities, and overall suitability to serve as the School Resource Officer for Waverly Community Schools.

Following the interview process, the Sheriff will make the final selection.

A letter of recommendation from your direct supervisor explaining why you would be a good fit for the School Resource Officer assignment is not required, but applicants are strongly encouraged to include one as part of their submission.
