Description
- Participates in the development of projects, policies, and recommendations concerning the development of the County; responds to citizen, applicant, developer, and media inquiries related to planning matters related to the Comprehensive Plan, ordinances, and development cases.
- Provides support for county-wide planning activities and projects.
- Reviews plans and permits for compliance with zoning and subdivision ordinances.
- Provides guidance to lawyers, engineers, developers, citizens, and others regarding planning and zoning matters.
- Coordinates communications and cooperation with other State and County agencies.
- Facilitates and coordinates citizen participation and promotes transparency in application reviews.
- Prepares reports and gives presentations to the Planning Commission involving conditional use permit applications, rezoning requests, and subdivision variance requests.
- Performs technical site inspections of projects.
- Assists the general public, City departments, local and state officials on planning, development and related matters; assists property owners in completing forms and applications.
- Represents County at public meetings.
- (Planner II) Performs independent and detailed work on projects, policies, and recommendations concerning the development of the County; takes lead roles on projects such as budget development, capital improvements plan, and Comprehensive Plan Review and provides guidance and training of staff.
- (Planner III) Performs complex, independent, and detailed work on projects, policies, and recommendations concerning the development of the County, and mentors and supervises team members as needed; oversees team-oriented projects such as ordinance revision, Comprehensive Plan review, and studies; takes a lead role on sensitive or significant legislative and administrative development applications for adherence to County goals and policies, and prepares recommendations and reports on assigned cases.

| Planner I | • Knowledge of the principles and practices of professional planning; requirements for land development, engineering practices, and applicable procedures; some knowledge of economics, political science, sociology, and municipal finance as applied to professional planning. |
| Planner II | • Considerable professional experience; master’s degree may substitute for some experience; AICP certification preferred; Considerable knowledge of planning principles, practices, and techniques as well as planning-related ordinances, regulations, and policies. • Demonstrated skill in making presentations to boards, commissions, and citizen groups, successful management of legislative review cases, review applications, and planning projects. |
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in planning or related field.
- Valid State of Virginia Driver’s License with a driving record that meets HR Policy requirements.
