Overview

Summary/ ObjectiveThe Turnaround Equipment Operator I supports industrial cleaning operations during refinery, petrochemical, and terminal turnarounds, shutdowns, and outages. This hands-on field position performs hydro blasting, vacuum operations, tank cleaning, and other industrial cleaning services under the direction of Crew Leaders and senior Equipment Operators. The Equipment Operator I plays an important role in maintaining safe and efficient operations, supporting crew productivity, and completing work within the demanding schedules and fast-paced environment of turnaround projects. Ensure compliance with company and customer procedures, safety standards, and environmental requirements. A minimum of one year of relevant experience is required, and the position requires the ability and willingness to travel as needed to support project and customer requirements.

Responsibilities

Essential FunctionsReasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.1. Perform industrial cleaning activities, including high-pressure hydro blasting; vacuum truck support and material handling; tank cleaning and residue removal; and heat exchanger, piping, and equipment cleaning.2. Assist with the setup, operation, inspection, and dismantling of industrial cleaning equipment in accordance with established operating procedures, job requirements, and safety standards.3. Safely and effectively handle hoses, lances, pumps, fittings, and other tools and equipment required to perform assigned work.4. Follow instructions from Crew Leaders, Equipment Operator II employees, and Field Supervisors to complete assigned tasks safely, efficiently, and within established project schedules.5. Comply with all company safety policies, OSHA requirements, customer procedures, and site-specific safety rules.6. Participate in required safety activities, including pre-job briefings, daily safety meetings, JSAs/JHAs, toolbox talks, and permitting processes.7. Properly use and maintain required personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow critical safety procedures, including confined-space entry, lockout/tagout (LOTO), line breaking, and high-pressure water hazard controls.8. Recognize and immediately report unsafe conditions, hazards, near misses, unsafe work practices, and other conditions that could affect employee or job-site safety.9. Inspect tools, hoses, pumps, and other equipment before use and promptly report damaged, defective, or malfunctioning equipment to the Crew Leader or Equipment Operator II.10. Assist with maintaining proper pressure settings, hose placement and management, and safe equipment operation under the direction of experienced operators or field leadership.11. Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas, equipment staging areas, and laydown yards throughout the project.12. Perform assigned work efficiently while maintaining a strong and consistent work pace without compromising safety or quality.13. Support overall crew productivity and turnaround schedules by completing assigned tasks correctly and helping minimize delays and rework.14. Follow job specifications, work instructions, and quality requirements to ensure assigned cleaning activities are completed to company and customer standards.15. Follow applicable work permits, customer requirements, and site-specific procedures throughout the duration of assigned activities.16. Assist Crew Leaders and Field Supervisors with job checklists, equipment inspections, compliance documentation, and other required project records as directed.17. Accurately record hours worked, assigned activities, and other required job information in accordance with company procedures.18. Communicate clearly and professionally with supervisors, crew members, customers, contractors, and other personnel to support safe and efficient project execution.19. Demonstrate dependability, punctuality, and consistent attendance, particularly during critical turnaround activities and scheduled outages.20. Maintain professionalism, focus, and composure while working under compressed schedules, changing priorities, adverse conditions, and other demands common to turnaround environments.21. Develop knowledge and proficiency in industrial cleaning equipment, techniques, safety practices, and operating procedures through hands-on experience and training.22. Attend and successfully complete all training, certifications, orientations, and other requirements established by the Company or customer.23. Meet all applicable Company and customer requirements, including required drug and alcohol testing and background screening.24. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Supervisory ResponsibilityThis position will have no supervisory responsibilities.

 

Work EnvironmentThis job operates in a petrochechemical / refinery environment. Exposure to cold working conditions during winter months and hot working conditions during the summer months. Exposure to noise, workers must wear protecting hearing equipment or frequently shout in order to be heard above ambient noise level. In an emergency situation, exposure to hazardous chemicals may occur and the use of a respirator is required. All employees will be required to be fit tested for the various respirators used as well as the ability to successfully pass a pulmonary function test (PFT).

 

Physical DemandsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The position of a Equipment Operator I – Turnaround Group can be extremely physical at times. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required, and for long periods of time to bend, stoop, walk, climb, squat, reach, kneel, push/pull, stand, sit, hand strength and dexterity. A Equipment Operator I – Turnaround Group will frequently lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift more than 51 pounds. Must be able to work in confined spaces. Must be able to work at heights and be able to climb ladders and stairways and work off platforms. Move about on hands and feet, bending body downward and forward bending leg and spine- working in a bent over position. Ability to verbally communicate alarms or warnings clearly, concisely, loudly, and quickly. Clearly and quickly hear or otherwise sense alarms or warning and take appropriate action, maintain equilibrium to prevent falling when moving, walking, standing, kneeling or crouching- particularly on narrow, uneven, irregular, slippery surfaces, going up and down ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles or other objects using hands, arms, feet or legs. Sensing physical attributes such as size, shape, temperature, texture, or sharpness of an object by touching. Must possess foot agility and dexterity- operating pedals, foot controls, kick bars and other similar tasks that require foot or toe motion. Grasp, grip and/or apply pressure to an object with the fingers, palm, holding an object in the hand. Lift, raise or lower objects in a vertical direction, particularly heavy or bulky objects. Move objects backwards, forward, in or out in a horizontal direction, particularly heavy or bulky objects. Pulling, exerting a steady backward, downward, upward, or outward force against an object- jerking, wrenching, stretching, towing, drawing, dragging or tugging objects in sustained motion. Must be able to physically fit into confined spaces and/or manways and must be able to physically fit into the PPE required of this position such as a life support helmet, harness, etc.

 

Position Type/ Expected Hours of WorkThis is a project- based position. Typical days and hours of work are variable/ project dependent. Over-time work is common and may be required as job duties demand.

 

TravelTravel is expected. Extensive travel throughout U.S. and overnight stay for extended periods of time may be required of this position.

 

Required Education and ExperienceMust have a valid TWIC and valid Driver’s License. Safety Essentials.

Qualifications

Preferred Education and ExperienceHigh School diploma or GED preferred but not required. One to three years of industrial, construction, or labor experience with industrial cleaning is preferred. OSHA 10, NCCER, Confined Space, HAZWOPER (24 or 40) preferred.
