Position Summary:

The Maverick Lloyd School for the Environment at Vermont Law and Graduate School invites applications for an open rank tenure-track appointment in Public Policy with a focus on environmental policy. 

We seek scholars from public policy, environmental studies, economics, law, political science, sociology, agricultural and food systems, and allied fields whose work crosses disciplinary boundaries within environmental policy. 

The successful candidate will teach in our Master of Public Policy (MPP) program and contribute to the school’s other graduate degrees: the Master of Climate and Environmental Policy, the Executive Master of Environmental Policy, and the Master of Energy Regulation and Law. The standard teaching load for this position is 4 courses per year taught over our 12-month curriculum, delivered residentially and online, and will include core MPP courses such as Introduction to Public Policy, Policy Design, Research Methods, or the two-semester Capstone Project sequence, along with electives in the candidate’s area of expertise. 

VLGS is nationally renowned for its environmental programs and is consistently rated one of the top environmental law programs in the United States. The school offers masters’ degrees in climate and environmental policy, energy regulation and law, and public policy, with policy specialties in animal protection, clean energy, and food and agriculture, as well as a transnational environmental policy track and a justice reform policy track. The Maverick Lloyd School for the Environment houses the school’s environmental programs and centers, including the Center for Agriculture and Food Systems, the Animal Law and Policy Institute, the Institute for Energy and the Environment, and the U.S.-Asia Partnerships for Environmental Law.  

Beyond teaching and scholarship, faculty at the Maverick Lloyd School collaborate with VLGS’s institutes and centers, contribute to curriculum development and faculty governance, and engage directly with the policymakers, practitioners, and community organizations whose work our programs serve.

Candidates will be considered for appointment as Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor, with rank commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Expected start date is August 2027.

Basic Qualifications

• Ph.D. by the time of appointment.
• Demonstrated expertise in environmental public policy, with scholarship or applied work spanning more than one substantive policy domain.
• Capacity to teach foundational graduate policy courses to students from a wide range of academic and professional backgrounds.

Additional Qualifications

• A record of scholarship appropriate to the rank sought.
• Facility with quantitative analysis and empirical methods is desired but not required. 
• Experience teaching in online or hybrid formats.

Preferred Qualifications

• Applied professional experience in government, advocacy, industry, or community organizations working on environmental, food systems, animal protection, or energy issues.
• A record of collaboration across disciplines and with external partners.
• International professional or academic experience.
• Strong communication skills across audiences, from academic peers to legislators to the public.

Salary Description

$90,000-$155,000 — salary commensurate with rank, qualifications, and experience.
