Employment Status: Temporary (October through December 2026 potential part-time; May through August 2027; September through December 2027 potential part-time)

Job Specifications
NorthWestern Energy is seeking an Intern - AMI Mitigation and Deployment to support the Customer Care team and work directly with the AMI - Automated Meter Infrastructure project. This intern will receive technical training to support the deployment and mitigation of endpoints for electric and gas meters, gather and develop data requests to support revenue requests, and test applied updates and issues with field resources.
Position Summary
Support all aspects of the AMI project by interacting with stakeholders to identify problems and develop solution requirements, helping implement and enhance project activities, supporting business process improvements and automation, troubleshooting complex issues, applying cybersecurity policies, and creating and maintaining process, training, technical documentation, standards, and procedures for supported systems and applications.
Pay Range: $20.00 - $21.00/hour (first-year interns $20.00/hour; returning interns $21.00/hour)
Location: Butte, Montana preferred; open to Montana and South Dakota service locations
Essential Functions
- Adhere to company safety standards and the Code of Business Conduct & Ethics
- Ensure all actions are consistent with NorthWestern Energy's values, mission, and strategic business objectives
- Interact with stakeholders to identify problems and develop requirements for solutions
- Implement, enhance, and support all aspects of the AMI project
- Exhibit enthusiasm for technology, streamlining business processes, and introducing new automation
- Demonstrate strong analytical skills to evaluate and troubleshoot complex issues
- Help the business protect assets through adoption and employment of NorthWestern Energy cybersecurity policies, tools, and practices
- Participate in creating and maintaining process, training, technical documentation, standards, and procedures related to the operations and maintenance of supported systems and applications
- Work with vendors and colleagues to research, plan, test, and implement patches, releases, and upgrades
Additional Responsibilities
- Support AMI endpoint deployment and mitigation activities for electric and gas meters
- Gather and develop data requests to support revenue requests
- Test applied updates and issues with field resources
- Collaborate with Customer Care, field resources, vendors, and internal colleagues to support project needs
What Is Required
- Demonstrate and maintain a good safety record
- Must possess strong interpersonal communication skills
- Engineering, Business, Information Technology (IT), or Computer Science (CS) related degree path required
- Student must have completed sophomore level or higher by start date
- Must be in good academic standing
- Must provide GPA in resume upon application
- Must possess strong customer service and computer technology problem-resolution skills
- General knowledge of Windows operating systems, servers, networks, security, and business continuity practices
- Strong written and oral communication and documentation skills
- Self-starter who pursues self-education and is customer focused
What Is Desired
- SQL database experience or exposure is a definite plus
- Strong aptitude to understand current technology trends in software, cloud, cybersecurity, and automation and apply them to NorthWestern Energy's business processing needs is preferred
- Enthusiasm for technology, streamlining business processes, and introducing new automation preferred
