Overview:
The Vice President of Surveying is responsible for the strategic, operational, financial, and organizational leadership of ARCXIS’s surveying operations. This position provides leadership and direction to surveying management and field teams while ensuring the accurate, timely, safe, and profitable completion of surveying projects.
The Vice President of Surveying establishes departmental objectives, operational standards, staffing strategies, quality-control practices, and performance expectations designed to support Company growth and exceptional client service. This position is responsible for developing scalable surveying operations while maintaining compliance with applicable laws, regulations, professional standards, contractual requirements, and Company policies.
The Vice President works closely with senior leadership, operations, sales, engineering, project management, finance, human resources, and other departments to align surveying capabilities with the Company’s overall business objectives.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Company’s surveying organization.
- Develop and execute short- and long-term strategies supporting growth, operational efficiency, profitability, quality, and client satisfaction.
- Establish departmental goals, performance standards, key performance indicators, and accountability measures for surveying operations.
- Oversee surveying operations across assigned markets, regions, and business units to ensure consistent execution and service delivery.
- Provide leadership, direction, coaching, and development to surveying managers, supervisors, team leads, and other assigned personnel.
- Establish appropriate organizational structures, staffing levels, leadership responsibilities, and resource allocations based on workload, business growth, and operational requirements.
- Monitor project volume, staffing capacity, scheduling, productivity, turnaround times, quality, and other operational performance metrics.
- Develop and implement standardized surveying procedures, workflows, documentation requirements, and quality-control practices.
- Ensure surveying activities are performed in accordance with project specifications, industry standards, contractual requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
- Maintain appropriate controls to ensure the accuracy, completeness, consistency, and integrity of surveying data and documentation.
- Identify operational risks, quality concerns, capacity constraints, and performance issues and implement appropriate corrective actions.
- Evaluate and implement surveying technology, robotic surveying equipment, GPS systems, data-collection tools, mobile applications, software, and other technologies that improve productivity and accuracy.
- Establish standards for surveying equipment acquisition, utilization, maintenance, calibration, replacement, security, and inventory management.
- Develop departmental budgets, forecasts, staffing plans, and capital expenditure recommendations.
- Monitor departmental financial performance, including revenue, labor utilization, productivity, equipment costs, operating expenses, and profitability.
- Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency, reduce unnecessary costs, increase capacity, and improve margins while maintaining quality and service standards.
- Partner with sales and business development leadership to evaluate new markets, clients, service offerings, and expansion opportunities.
- Participate in major client relationships and assist with resolving significant operational, technical, scheduling, or service concerns.
- Support the development of proposals, scopes of work, pricing strategies, operational commitments, and resource plans for significant surveying opportunities.
- Develop succession plans and leadership-development strategies to support continued growth of the surveying organization.
- Establish training and development expectations for survey personnel, including technical procedures, technology, safety, quality, and Company standards.
- Partner with Human Resources regarding recruiting, workforce planning, employee development, performance management, compensation planning, and organizational needs.
- Promote a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, collaboration, professionalism, safety, and high-quality client service.
- Ensure surveying employees follow established safety procedures and use required personal protective equipment.
- Review significant safety incidents, operational concerns, quality issues, client complaints, and other matters requiring executive-level attention.
- Maintain effective communication between surveying operations and other Company departments and leadership teams.
- Provide senior leadership with regular updates regarding surveying performance, financial results, staffing, risks, opportunities, and strategic initiatives.
- Remain informed regarding changes in surveying technology, industry practices, laws, regulations, and market conditions that may affect Company operations.
- Represent ARCXIS professionally with clients, builders, developers, contractors, governmental entities, business partners, employees, and other stakeholders.
- Perform other related duties and strategic initiatives as assigned.
Leadership and Management Responsibilities:
The Vice President of Surveying has leadership responsibility for assigned surveying operations and personnel and may directly or indirectly supervise managers, supervisors, team leads, field survey personnel, and other employees.
Responsibilities may include:
- Selecting, developing, coaching, and evaluating members of the surveying leadership team.
- Establishing organizational goals and individual performance expectations.
- Reviewing operational and financial performance across markets and teams.
- Making or recommending hiring, promotion, disciplinary, compensation, organizational, and termination decisions in accordance with Company policies.
- Developing succession plans and identifying future leaders within the organization.
- Establishing consistent management practices and accountability throughout the surveying organization.
- Ensuring appropriate staffing and leadership coverage for existing and expanding markets.
- Promoting effective communication and collaboration between field operations, management, and corporate support functions.

Requirements
Education, Experience and Desired Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in surveying, geomatics, engineering, construction management, business administration, or a related field preferred.
- Significant progressive experience in land surveying, construction surveying, field surveying, or a closely related industry.
- Minimum of five years of progressively responsible leadership or management experience preferred, including responsibility for multiple teams, markets, or operational functions.
- Demonstrated experience managing large-scale or multi-market surveying operations strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of surveying operations, field procedures, quality-control practices, project management, and applicable professional standards.
- Experience with robotic surveying equipment, GPS technology, data collectors, surveying software, mobile applications, and related technology.
- Strong understanding of residential construction and residential surveying operations highly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience developing operational processes, performance standards, and scalable business practices.
- Experience with budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, productivity management, and operational performance measurement.
- Demonstrated ability to manage organizational growth, changing workloads, staffing requirements, and competing business priorities.
- Strong business judgment and demonstrated ability to make effective operational and strategic decisions.
- Excellent verbal, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to build, develop, and lead high-performing teams.
- Ability to develop strong working relationships with executives, managers, employees, clients, and external stakeholders.
- Ability and willingness to travel regularly to Company offices, markets, client locations, and project sites as business needs require.
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record when operating Company vehicles or traveling on Company business.
- Commitment to maintaining high ethical standards and ensuring compliance with applicable surveying laws, regulations, professional requirements, and Company policies.
- Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) licensure or equivalent professional surveying credential preferred.
