Financial Controller

We are seeking a Financial Controller for a growing commercial construction business in Hamilton with nationwide operations.

This is a hands-on senior finance role for someone who understands the realities of commercial construction, sees the big picture, communicates well, and enjoys working alongside operational and leadership teams.

You will take ownership of our financial management, reporting, forecasting and commercial controls, while helping us build better systems and make better business decisions.

Importantly, we want someone who is strong in AI and modern technology and can help us identify practical opportunities to automate processes, improve financial visibility and give our people better information.

As the business grows, we want this person to grow with us.

Responsibilities

• Take ownership of the company's financial management, controls and reporting.
• Produce accurate and meaningful monthly management accounts.
• Lead budgeting, forecasting and cash-flow management.
• Maintain a strong understanding of the company's financial position, performance and forward workload.
• Ensure appropriate financial controls, policies and processes are in place.
• Manage year-end requirements and relationships with accountants, auditors, banks and other external advisers.
• Oversee tax, statutory and regulatory financial requirements as applicable.
• Manage construction finance and P&L.

·       Manage project-level performance with the overall financial performance of the business.

• Understand what is really driving business performance.
• Identify financial and commercial risks before they become problems.
• Improve forecasting and scenario planning.
• Develop meaningful KPIs and dashboards.
• Support strategic planning and sustainable growth.
• Translate financial information into clear commercial recommendations.
• Utilize and implement AI, automation and modern financial technology to improve financial management of the company. Identify practical applications that save time, provide better information or improve decision-making.

Work closely with project and commercial teams to understand:

• Project profitability and margin.
• Cost-to-complete and forecast final cost.
• Work in progress.
• Project cash flow.
• Variations and claims.
• Retentions.
• Subcontractor and supplier commitments.
• Progress claims and payment cycles.
• Revenue recognition.
• Project risks and opportunities.
• Overheads and business-wide profitability.

Experience

·       5+ years of Financial Controller, Commercial Finance Manager or similar experience.

• Significant commercial construction experience.
• Strong understanding of construction project accounting and commercial reporting.
• Excellent budgeting, forecasting and cash-flow management capability.
• Confidence analysing project margins, WIP, forecast costs and financial risks.
• Strong systems and data capability.
• Demonstrated ability to use AI and automation tools in a business environment.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• The ability to turn complex financial information into straightforward commercial advice.
• Strong attention to detail while maintaining a big-picture view.
• A practical, solutions-focused approach.
• The confidence to challenge when required, without creating unnecessary friction.
• Relevant accounting qualifications and/or substantial equivalent commercial experience.
