Summary:

The Patient Access Financial Counselor, reflects the mission, vision, and values of Ovation Healthcare, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.  This position reports to the Patient Access Manager.

The ideal candidate will assist patients and their families in understanding their financial obligations, exploring payment options, and securing financial assistance for medical services. This role requires strong communication skills, knowledge of healthcare billing and insurance processes, and a commitment to providing excellent patient support.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist patients in understanding hospital charges, insurance coverage, and available financial assistance programs.

  • Evaluate patients’ financial situations and guide them through the application process for Medicaid, charity care, and other assistance programs.

  • Work closely with insurance providers to verify coverage and benefits.

  • Develop payment plans for uninsured or underinsured patients, ensuring compliance with hospital policies.

  • Explain billing statements, answer patient inquiries, and address any discrepancies.

  • Maintain accurate financial records and documentation of patient interactions.

  • Collaborate with the billing department, case managers, and social workers to optimize financial solutions for patients.

  • Stay up to date with changes in healthcare regulations, insurance policies, and financial aid programs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of medical insurance plans, Medicaid, and financial assistance programs.

  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.

  • Ability to handle sensitive financial information with confidentiality and professionalism.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and hospital billing systems.

Work Experience, Education, and Certifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Healthcare Administration, or a related field preferred.

  • Experience in healthcare billing, insurance verification, or financial counseling strongly preferred.
