Damen Song Cam Shipyard is a joint venture between Damen Shipyards Group in the Netherlands and Song Cam Shipyard in Hai Phong, Vietnam. As a strategic and preferred production location within Damen Shipyards Group, the shipyard builds tugboats and workboats for clients worldwide. Damen Song Cam combines international shipbuilding expertise with strong local capabilities to deliver reliable, high-quality vessels and continuously strengthen its production operations.
The role
As Legal Officer, you are responsible for supporting the Company’s legal affairs and helping ensure that business activities are conducted in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. You provide practical legal advice, review and prepare legal documents, monitor regulatory developments and identify potential legal risks.
The role supports a broad range of operational and business matters, with particular focus on customs, power supply, investment plans, local project contracts and purchasing contracts. You work closely with management and internal departments, while coordinating with regulators, public authorities, external counsel and other relevant stakeholders when required.
Key responsibilities
As Legal Officer, your main responsibilities are:
Provide clear and practical legal advice to management and internal departments on legal matters arising from the Company’s operations.
Handle ongoing legal matters and collaborate with management to develop appropriate legal and defence strategies.
Participate in the negotiation of contracts, agreements and other legal documents when required.
Draft, review and finalize contracts, agreements and related legal documents to protect the Company’s legal rights and support legislative compliance.
Clarify legal terminology, requirements and contractual provisions for relevant stakeholders across the organization.
Continuously research legislation, regulations, codes, statutes and judicial decisions to remain informed of current legal requirements and changes.
Assess how changes in laws and regulations may affect the Company’s activities and provide timely recommendations to relevant departments.
Apply effective legal risk-management techniques and provide proactive advice on potential legal issues.
Communicate and negotiate with regulators, public authorities, external counsel and other external parties, while building professional relationships based on trust.
Support complex legal matters involving multiple stakeholders and competing requirements.
Prepare legal reports and other legal documentation as assigned.
Represent or support the Company in litigation matters and coordinate with external lawyers when court proceedings or formal legal actions arise.
Perform other legal duties aligned with business requirements and assigned responsibilities.
Skills & experience
To be successful in this role, you bring:
Bachelor’s degree in Law.
Three to five years of relevant legal experience, gained in a law firm, the legal practice of a professional-services firm, or a project-development or construction environment.
International business experience, particularly in import-export activities or foreign direct investment, is preferred.
Strong professional knowledge of law and the ability to keep pace with legal developments and regulatory trends.
Good command of English for professional communication and legal documentation.
Strong contract drafting, review and negotiation skills.
Sound analytical capability and the ability to assess legal risks and propose practical solutions.
High level of accuracy, care and attention to detail, with a focus on preventing errors.
Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to work professionally with stakeholders at all organizational levels, both internally and externally.
Good planning and organizational skills, including the ability to set priorities, define required actions and manage resources to achieve objectives.
Integrity, transparency, intellectual curiosity and a strong willingness to learn and explore new topics in depth.
