The Senior Energy Analyst supports Netcare’s sustainability and energy strategy by analysing the Group’s energy consumption, costs and generation across the portfolio, identifying opportunities to reduce cost and carbon, and managing Netcare’s commercial energy and renewable-supply agreements. The role combines hands-on energy data analysis with commercial and contract management, translating complex energy, tariff and metering data into clear, actionable insight for the Sustainability committee, Group Finance and facility teams.

A core function is managing Netcare’s renewable energy supply and wheeling agreements, as well as any future power purchase or renewable energy agreements the Group enters into. For these agreements the role reviews and approves energy forecasts and supply allocations, verifies the energy proposed for each facility, manages allocations, reallocations and makeup provisions, oversees metering-data quality and access, and tracks invoicing and the reconciliation of wheeling credits against the Group’s utility accounts.
Beyond contract management, the Senior Energy Analyst monitors and analyses Group-wide energy patterns and metering data, identifies new energy-saving, generation and procurement opportunities, supports feasibility studies and business cases, and helps drive operational efficiency and Netcare’s decarbonisation and Net Zero objectives. The role works closely with the energy engineering and sustainability operations teams and is expected to grow in scope as Netcare’s renewable portfolio and the South African energy market evolve.

KEY WORK OUTPUT AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

DISRUPTIVE INNOVATION

Energy analysis & Insight

• Monitor and analyse Group-wide energy consumption, demand, cost and generation patterns across facilities; interpret load profiles and time-series metering data.
• Build and maintain dashboards, reports and models; benchmark sites against each other and against targets.
• Identify anomalies, inefficiencies and pockets of excellence, and recommend interventions that can be replicated across the Group.

Opportunity identification & evaluation

• Identify and evaluate new opportunities to reduce energy cost and carbon — energy efficiency, embedded / onsite generation, renewable wheeling, tariff optimisation and alternative procurement.
• Support feasibility studies, business cases and savings / payback analysis for energy and sustainability projects.
• Keep abreast of energy-market developments, technologies and regulation to inform Netcare’s energy strategy.

Tariff & cost management

• Apply and interpret Eskom and municipal tariff structures (energy and capacity charges, Time-of-Use) to validate energy costs and quantify savings.
• Support energy budgeting, forecasting of spend, and verification of utility and supplier invoices.

Renewable & energy supply agreements – forecasting & approval

• For Netcare’s renewable supply / wheeling agreements, review and approve the Medium-Term (up to 36-month), Short-Term (12-month) and Settlement (up to 2-month) forecasts ahead of Network Operator deadlines (e.g. Medium-Term by 30 April and 31 October; Short-Term by 30 November).
• Gather and consolidate facility inputs on Planned Events – maintenance schedules, embedded / onsite generation and outages, third-party generation, new supply arrangements, expansions, energy-efficiency initiatives, closures and low-occupancy periods.
• Notify the supplier of changes to Planned Events within required timeframes, ensuring sufficient headroom is retained for Netcare’s ongoing energy-efficiency drive.

Energy proposed per facility – verification & approval

• Review and approve each Monthly Supply Limit (or equivalent allocation) notice within the contractual window, verifying the energy proposed for each facility before the allocation deadline.
• Check confirmed available consumption, embedded / third-party generation, planned outages and maintenance impacts per premises.
• Flag where the supply limit is below the contracted energy allocation of an agreement and identify any customer shortfall.
• Confirm allocations align with the contracted energy terms of the relevant agreement.

Allocation, reallocation & makeup provisions

• Track energy allocations per premises against contracted volumes; manage temporary and permanent reallocations and makeup provisions in accordance with the relevant agreement.
• Work to maximise Netcare’s contracted renewable energy and minimise deemed / unused energy.
• Manage relief events, force majeure and change-in-law impacts per the applicable agreement provisions.

Invoicing, billing & financial reconciliation

• Review and validate supplier invoices (wheeling) for accuracy against contracted tariffs, allocations, TOU bands and approved quantities before approving for payment.
• Track monthly wheeling credits – quantities, Time-of-Use allocations and tariffs – against supplier invoices.
• Reconcile supplier-invoiced quantities with the rebate quantities on Netcare’s utility (Eskom / municipal) accounts; promptly investigate and resolve discrepancies.
• Ensure utility invoices are made available to the supplier and support Group Finance on payment and reconciliation.

Metering data management

• Support the roll-out, integrity and access of metering and monitoring systems across the Group.
• Ensure suppliers have appropriate access to premises metering data (via API or agreed means) for forecasting and allocation.
• Monitor metering accuracy within agreed tolerances, coordinate remediation of out-of-tolerance sites, and manage third-party wheeling data.

Contract & compliance management

• Maintain expert working knowledge of Netcare’s energy and renewable-supply agreements and ensure operational obligations and deadlines are met.
• Support periodic review and amendment of operating protocols as needs evolve and keep abreast of relevant legislation and regulation (e.g. NERSA).
• Maintain audit trails and supporting documentation for internal, partner and regulatory review.

Continuous improvement & innovation

• Develop and improve the tools, models and processes used to manage Netcare’s energy data and agreements.
• Support Netcare’s readiness for an evolving South African energy market (including the South African Wholesale Energy Market, SAWEM).

STAKEHOLDER MANAGEMENT

Build and maintain stakeholder relationships

• Act as a key operational contact with energy suppliers, Eskom Distribution, the NTCSA / Network Operator and municipalities on energy-supply matters.
• Engage facility, finance and procurement stakeholders to obtain inputs, resolve issues and communicate outcomes clearly.

SKILLS PROFILE

EDUCATION

Essential

• Undergraduate degree in Engineering, Business Science, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, or another quantitative field.

Advantageous

• CEM, CMVP, ECSA professional

WORK EXPERIENCE

Essential

• Experienced professional with 5+ years of relevant experience

Advantageous

• Experience in utilities, metering, energy analytics, energy trading, financial, risk, system modelling or energy management sectors

KNOWLEDGE

Essential

• Eskom tariff frameworks (energy & capacity charges, Time-of-Use) and wheeling / wheeling-credit mechanics.
• Power Purchase Agreement structures – Contractual principles, allocations, makeup and Energy allocation provisions.
• Energy load profiling, forecasting and time-series consumption data.
• Metering data management, validation and tolerance standards.
• NERSA regulatory context and the evolving South African energy market (including SAWEM).

Position specific technical skills

• Essential: Advanced Excel (modelling, complex formulas, data manipulation) and BI reporting (PowerBI, Tableau or similar) for dashboards over large datasets.
• Advantageous: Python (or similar scripting) and SQL for connecting to data sources, automating data handling and analysis.
• Essential: Strong, structured analytical and reconciliation ability with high attention to detail and data accuracy.
