Corporate Relations Director, South East Asia

About us

With over 200 brands sold in nearly 180 countries, we’re the world’s leading premium drinks company. From global icons like Johnnie Walker, Guinness and Tanqueray to Smirnoff and Don Julio, we create brands consumers love. Bring your passion and use your curiosity as you explore, collaborate and innovate. Together with passionate people from all over the world, you’ll test new ideas, learn and grow, and unlock a brighter, more exciting future.

Join us to create a career worth celebrating.

Join our Corporate Relations Team

Our Corporate Relations (CR) team are reputation experts, shaping and protecting the future of our business and much-loved brands. With the ambition to become one of the most trusted and respected consumer goods companies in the world, our CR team act as the link to our external stakeholders, managing critical relationships with the outside world including the press and media, investors and government organisations, as well as NGOs and our many partners.

Operating across different markets, brands, and business areas including Corporate Communications, Policy and ESG, we collaborate with people all around the world. Join our team of experts, and you'll play a crucial role in protecting and promoting who we are and what we do, and ultimately our licence to operate.

About this role

The CRD is responsible for shaping our policy and reputational environment to protect our license to operate, unlock long-term growth and enhance Diageo’s reputation.

Reporting directly to the Corporate Relations director for APAC & Australia, the role is responsible for executing the Global CR Strategy within the SEA market consistent with CR’s design principles:

- ‘One CR Team’ mindset;

- Delivering functional priorities set by the CR Leadership Team; and

- Prioritising value creation for the SEA market.

Within SEA, it is a trusted partner to the Managing Director, the leadership team and other functional heads in the execution of the Global CR Strategy, locally adapted where needed to ensure it is relevant and impactful to the local context and the market’s strategic priorities.

As one of Diageo’s most important ‘breakout’ markets, the Southeast Asia business has ambitious growth objectives across premium core and luxury spirits and beer; all underpinned by advantaged route-to-market structures, an enviable portfolio of brands, and a diverse consumer environment with significant opportunities in gifting, digital and a burgeoning cocktail culture.

At the same time, Southeast Asia has among the most complex and volatile trade, excise / tax and regulatory environments on beverage alcohol anywhere in the world.  It is characterized by high import tariffs, burdensome and discriminatory tax structures, varied regulatory rules with ‘dark (highly restrictive)’ markets (e.g. Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand) and ‘light (less regulated)’ markets (e.g. Singapore, Philippines), cultural and religious sensitivities (e.g. Indonesia, Thailand), and a deeply political and sensitive stakeholder landscape.

You will be responsible for:

  • Navigate and shape public policy environment.  This includes opportunities and risks relating to excise & customs duties/tax, international trade and market access, regulatory policies (e.g. marketing, labelling, availability and other regulatory freedoms), and alcohol & public health issues.
  • Deliver internal and external corporate communications.  This includes Diageo’s cultural transformation agenda (purpose, behaviours), media relations, communications support to public policy and society campaigns, and issues and crises comms.
  • Develop and implement society agenda consistent with Diageo’s Spirit of Progress strategy.  This includes our programmes and initiatives on positive drinking, social impact and sustainability (water replenishment).
  • Own and build trusted stakeholder relationships including government, trade associations and other industry bodies, social aspects organisations and civil society / NGOs.

The required qualifications for this role are:

  • Proven CR leadership experiences, ideally in highly regulated sectors for a multinational, large organisation, trade association or agency.
  • Mature executive presence: partnering with senior business leaders (including at MD/GM level), leading small agile CR teams and ability to execute through trade associations.
  • Ability to operate in matrix structure, including successfully implementing global strategies/initiatives at local market level, highly preferred.
  • Strong capabilities and background in public policy, government relations and/or strategic communications.

Working with Us

We embrace diversity in the broadest possible sense. This means that you’ll be welcomed and celebrated for who you are just by being you. Our ambition is to create the best performing, most trusted and respected consumer products companies in the world. Join us and help transform our business as we take our brands to the next level and build new ones as part of shaping the next generation of celebrations for consumers around the world.
