Candidates must have expertise in social or social cognitive psychology and be committed to excellent teaching and producing high-quality research with undergraduate collaborators. A Ph.D. in Psychology is required by the position’s start date of August 1, 2027.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant and supportive department with outstanding teaching and research resources. Candidates will teach courses in stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination, along with introductory psychology and research methods and statistics. They may also have the opportunity to teach other courses that support or expand the department’s curriculum, including a first-year writing seminar. The teaching load is five courses per year, split over two semesters. Faculty are also expected to serve as research mentors to undergraduate students throughout the academic year and during the summer. We offer competitive start-up funds, research space, and summer support.

Founded in 1826, Furman University is a highly ranked liberal arts college that offers all students an integrated four-year pathway preparing them for lives of purpose and impact. The psychology major is known for its rigorous coursework, exceptional mentoring and advising, and numerous opportunities for high-impact, engaged learning experiences (e.g. research, internships, and travel study) supported by university resources. More information about the department is available at furman.edu/academics/psychology.

Furman University is dedicated to fostering a vibrant and inclusive community through excellence in teaching, mentorship, and programming. We believe that cultural understanding, inclusiveness, and freedom of inquiry, thought, and discourse are essential components of a transformative undergraduate education.

We advance these ideals with a liberal arts and sciences curriculum built on a substantial general education program, featuring traditional and innovative elements, and a robust portfolio of disciplinary and interdisciplinary major and minor areas of study. Additionally, we have established and continue to develop various initiatives, including historic projects, dialogue programs such as On Discourse and the Intergroup Dialogues Program, the Center for Interpersonal Connections, and four distinctive external-facing institutes.

The successful candidate will have the ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds and contribute to Furman’s commitment to expanding access and opportunity to Furman’s rich learning culture.

Furman is located in Greenville, South Carolina, one of the fastest-growing cities in the Southeast and is ranked among "America's Ten Best" by Forbes Magazine. The thriving downtown features excellent restaurants, in-town parks, shops, museums, galleries, music venues, and theaters. Greenville also enjoys an impressive network of nonprofits, small businesses, and international corporations. The city also has excellent public and private schools and a vibrant international community. A 20-mile bike and running trail connects the university to Greenville and to Travelers Rest, which was named "one of America's coolest small towns." The surrounding area abounds with outdoor recreational activities and has some of the country's most beautiful lakes, rivers, and mountains. Greenville is 2½ hours from Atlanta, 1½ hours from Charlotte, and only one hour from Asheville, North Carolina. Greenville is within easy reach of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Atlantic Beaches. The newly renovated Greenville-Spartanburg Airport, located just 25 minutes from downtown, runs daily flights to major cities and airline hubs. It is an ideal place to live and work.

Applicants should submit the following documents as a single PDF in the order listed: a letter of interest, C.V., statement of teaching philosophy and evidence of teaching effectiveness, a statement of scholarly interests, representative publications, and complete contact information for three references. The statement of teaching philosophy should describe your inclusive teaching and mentoring efforts, broadly conceived, and how your teaching and mentoring may contribute to a liberal arts and sciences community that aims, among other things, to “honor inquiry, promote diversity, [and] strive for equity” (FUture Focused). You may also discuss any relevant professional development, service contributions, or other experiences that have refined your skills or demonstrate your efforts in these areas. Selected candidates will be asked to arrange for 3 letters of recommendation to be submitted.

Questions about the position can be sent to Dr. Erin Hahn, Department Chair ([email protected]).
