The Assistant Director for Student Organizations advances intentional student involvement, leadership development, and belonging through the development and administration of a comprehensive student organization program. Reporting to the Associate Director, the Assistant Director provides leadership for organization recognition and support, student leader and advisor development, event and financial oversight, and involvement initiatives. The position strengthens organizations as communities for learning, connection, and meaningful participation in campus life.The Assistant Director translates departmental priorities into effective programs and services, exercises sound judgment in applying university policies, and maintains timely, accurate, and responsive support. The position works collaboratively with students, advisors, faculty, staff, and community partners to support student success and responsible organizational leadership.
Job Description
- Oversee student organization recognition, eligibility, records, and leadership transitions; help organizations grow and remain active.
- Advise student leaders on managing their organizations, recruiting and retaining members, working together, and resolving conflict; encourage ownership and accountability.
- Guide organizations on event planning, contracts, insurance, travel, fundraising, and finances; work with campus partners to address concerns and meet university requirements.
- Support organization finances and student government funding; help groups manage funds responsibly, maintain accurate records, and follow financial requirements.
- Lead programs that strengthen student organizations, increase involvement, and support student learning and belonging.
- Develop and deliver training that prepares student leaders and advisors to lead effective organizations and meet university expectations.
- Support organization advisors with guidance, resources, and clear expectations for their role.
- Manage student organization systems, communications, and resources; keep information accurate, accessible, and up to date.
- Recruit, train, supervise, mentor, and evaluate assigned student employees.
- Assess student participation, learning, organization effectiveness, and services; use data and feedback to improve programs and guide decisions.
- Build campus and community partnerships, serve on relevant committees, and contribute to departmental planning, outreach, and programs.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of the department’s mission.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in education, business, communications, social work, or a related field.
- 6 months experience in student activities, student organization advising, leadership development, student unions, or a related area, including experience working with or advising student groups.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in college student personnel, student affairs, higher education, or a related field.
- 1 year of experience in student organization administration, leadership education, event oversight, risk management, financial stewardship, staff supervision, or assessment of programs and services.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Sound judgment and the ability to apply policy consistently
- Strong communication, organization, and follow-through
- Ability to manage competing priorities with appropriate autonomy
- Understanding of college student development and effective advising
- Ability to build collaborative relationships and support students with varied backgrounds and experiences
- Proficiency with technology used for program administration, communication, and assessment.
Work Schedule
Normal working hours of 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Ability and willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to support student programs and departmental responsibilities.
