The Manager, Data Systems Run leads one of several Run teams responsible for the operational stability, reliability, and day-to-day performance of our data platforms and services. This role is accountable for ensuring high availability, efficient incident resolution, and proactive platform health management for their assigned platforms while supporting the transition of new capabilities from Build to Run.
This position emphasizes building mature run practices, balancing operational excellence with modernization efforts, and maintaining strong SLAs for data platforms that power both internal and external consumers.
What You'll Do:
Lead, mentor, and grow a team of data engineers and operations specialists focused on platform stability and run-the-business support
Own overall reliability, incident management, and production support for assigned data platforms and services
Establish and enforce operational standards, SLAs, monitoring, and runbooks to ensure consistent platform performance
Implement and manage rotating after-hours on-call support to maintain 24/7 coverage for critical systems
Partner with Platform Engineering, Build teams, and TPOs to ensure smooth transition of new capabilities into production
Drive continuous improvement in platform reliability, cost efficiency, and operational processes
Provide regular operational visibility and status updates to leadership, including incident reports and platform health metrics
Collaborate with peer Run managers, Data Quality, Platform, and domain teams to resolve cross-functional issues and support modernization efforts
Basic Requirements:
Degree or equivalent, and typically requires 6+ years of relative experience in data engineering, platform operations, or related technical roles, and 0-2+ years of management or team leadership experience
Strong experience in data platform operations, incident management, and production support in complex environments
Deep understanding of data engineering workflows, monitoring tools, and operational excellence practices
Demonstrated ability to lead teams through high-pressure situations and rotating on-call responsibilities
Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate technical issues for both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Highly organized with strong prioritization and problem-solving skills
Preferred Skills:
Experience with modern cloud data platforms (Databricks, Azure, etc.) and legacy system support
Background in ITIL, SRE principles, or formal incident/command center processes
Familiarity with healthcare data environments and compliance requirements
Proven track record of improving platform reliability and reducing incident volume
Ability to balance short-term operational demands with long-term platform modernization goals
