Description
The Planning Technician performs routine to complex technical and support work for the City and County’s Planning Division and provides information and assistance to City and County staff and the public. The position involves extensive day-to-day communication with the public regarding planning and zoning inquiries. The Planning Technician works collaboratively with employees, departments and divisions, other agencies, and the public to deliver effective and innovative services.
The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Evening meetings for public hearings and occasional weekend work may be required.
A hybrid work option is available after the initial training period, consistent with the Community Development Department’s hybrid work policy.

Provide support to the Planning Division including research, code interpretation, plan review, permit review, addressing, and ongoing activities.
Monitor and track permit and other administrative and/or variance inquiries and applications. Coordinate deadlines and requirements with other staff, developers and property owners, and record official documents.
Manage simple development applications such as administrative modifications and public hearing variances through the City and County of Broomfield’s development review process. Guide and support the applicant with the submittal, review, and revisions, public notices and any presentation. Prepare staff reports, appropriate attachment/exhibits, and draft resolutions.
May make presentations to the Neighborhood Board of Adjustments in regard to zoning variance requests.
Provide information and assistance to City and County of Broomfield employees, the public, and developers regarding interpretation of the City and County of Broomfield and Community Development Department's land use, zoning, ordinances, plans, rules, policies, procedures, regulations, long-range planning and special projects as assigned
Serve as the initial contact for persons seeking information from the Planning Division in person, by email, by telephone or through web-based communications. Respond or forward inquiries as appropriate. Track requests for information and conduct research on issues as requested and respond to requests for information from the public.
Input, review and approve fences, signs and other basic building permits Ensure compliance with approved plans, zoning and municipal codes, and conformity with established City and County of Broomfield policies and practices.
Attend neighborhood meetings, community meetings, pre-application meetings, and other meetings and hearings as requested to takes notes, undertake follow-up activities, and assist planners in a variety of meeting-related support functions.
Support planners with mapping, web sites and planning presentation and data needs. Prepare and update project web pages. Update the Active Planning Map. Prepare and distribute simple surveys for neighborhood input.
Education
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university - required
Experience
One year experience required in a support staff position in municipal planning, community development, or a related field.
Years of related experience may be substituted for required education, however education cannot be substituted for the necessary work experience. Candidates must meet the minimum required years of work experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and safe driving record for continued employment. New hires must, as a condition of employment, pass the following pre-offer and post-offer/hire processes: oral board, reference checks, driving record check, background checks including local police check and sex-offender registry.
Work is generally scheduled M-F.
Some evening and weekend hours.
Work is performed at City/County work locations with the ability to perform some duties remotely in accordance with Broomfield's remote work policy
Attend meetings as required during evening hours. Some meetings may be virtual or will require in-person attendance.
Requires moving or being stationary to a significant degree.
Physical demands are described as light (exert up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects).
Tasks may require use of a computer for several hours.
