Description
Founded in 1909 and affiliated with the Episcopal Church, The Bishop’s School is an independent, all gender college-preparatory school for 800 students in grades six through twelve. The School is located on a historic campus in the heart of La Jolla, just 10 miles north of downtown San Diego.
With a student-teacher ratio of approximately 9 to 1, Bishop’s is known for academic, artistic, and athletic excellence while celebrating character development, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. Last year’s applicant pool drew from 72 zip codes and 168 middle and high schools throughout San Diego County and beyond. Fifty-one percent of the student population self-identify as students of color. Additionally, over $4 million in need-based grants is awarded annually.
The Bishop’s School is seeking a dedicated, knowledgeable, and student-centered High School Boys’ Varsity Lacrosse Head Coach to lead and develop the School’s boys’ lacrosse program. The Head Coach will provide leadership and oversight for the entire boys’ lacrosse program, including the Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Middle School levels, helping to create a cohesive program and positive experience for student-athletes at every stage of development.
Responsibilities include overseeing practices and competitions, supporting player and coach development, establishing program standards, and building a strong, inclusive team culture. The ideal candidate will be committed to developing student-athletes both on and off the field while promoting teamwork, sportsmanship, character, and competitive excellence. The Head Coach is expected to model and uphold The Bishop’s School’s mission and core values and foster positive, professional relationships with students, families, coaches, colleagues, and the broader school community.
The ideal candidate will possess high level coaching experience, previous experience working with students in grades 6-12, demonstrated ability to work effectively with student-athletes while maintaining high standards of professionalism and integrity.
This part-time seasonal role includes the pre-season, regular spring season, and playoff rounds and is anticipated to start December 1, 2026.
Responsibilities Include:
- Plan, organize, and lead effective daily practices and team activities
- Prepare student-athletes for interscholastic competition while emphasizing skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship
- Maintain knowledge of CIF and applicable league rules and regulations
- Communicate regularly with student-athletes regarding goals, development, and expectations
- Evaluate individual and team performance and provide constructive feedback
- Monitor and support the physical development and well-being of student-athletes through appropriate training methods
- Maintain team records, documentation, and reports as required
- Utilize the HUDL game film system and appropriate social media platforms to enhance game analysis, player development, and program engagement
- Assist with the organization and management of home contests and program logistics
- Transport students in school vehicles when necessary and in accordance with school policies
- Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated coaching and leadership skills in the sport of lacrosse
- The ability to inspire, motivate, and mentor student-athletes
- Knowledge of lacrosse rules, strategies, and competition standards
- Knowledge of strength and conditioning principles appropriate for student-athletes
- Ability to build positive relationships with student-athletes, families, and colleagues
- Ability to anticipate and support the needs of student-athletes and the athletics department
- Strong work ethic with a proactive, responsible, and reliable approach
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving abilities and the ability to effectively manage multiple responsibilities
- Ability to collaborate with members of the athletics department and the broader school community
- Intermediate proficiency with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office and willingness to learn new systems as needed
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and occasional off-season events

- Demonstrated ability to follow athletic regulations and school policies

- NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching
- First Aid and CPR Certification

The anticipated hourly rate for this position is $40/hour to $45/hour based on experience.
