JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for assisting in the diagnosis and repair of mechanical problems on a variety of vehicles and equipment. This position reports to the Fleet Services Coordinator.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Services and maintains city vehicles and equipment.
• Performs computer and mechanical diagnosis on vehicles and equipment.
• Performs a variety of preventative maintenance tasks.
• Performs corrective maintenance procedures.
• Performs other related job duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent; one (1) to three (3) years’ experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Special Qualifications:

• Knowledge of preventive maintenance techniques as related to division equipment and vehicles.
• Knowledge of the tools, equipment, and procedures used in the diagnosis and repair of equipment and vehicles.
• Knowledge of basic mechanical theory.
• Knowledge of local government operations, policies and plans, and modern office practices and procedures.
• Skill in the diagnosis of mechanical problems for a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
• Skill in welding and parts fabrication.
• Skill in the maintenance of repair of department equipment.
• Skill in performing preventive and corrective maintenance procedures.
• Skill in the use of a variety of hand and power tools.
• Skill in using computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is very heavy work, which requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is typically performed in a garage environment. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
