The Health & Wellness Engineering team at Walmart is on a mission to make healthcare more accessible, affordable, and convenient for millions of customers across the US. We build the technology that powers Walmart's pharmacy, specialty pharmacy, and wellness platforms spanning prescription management, clinical workflows, patient-facing digital experiences, and health program delivery. Our systems process millions of prescriptions annually and connect patients, pharmacists, prescribers, and payers in real time. The team operates at the intersection of technology and healthcare, building platforms that have a direct, measurable impact on patient outcomes and community health.
 

What you'll do:
As a Senior Software Engineer for Walmart Health & Wellness, you'll have the opportunity to:

• Lead the design, development, and delivery of scalable, high-availability backend services and patient-facing applications that power Walmart's pharmacy and health platforms
• Own technical design for complex features and subsystems — write and review design documents, lead architecture discussions, and drive decisions on trade-offs across scalability, performance, and maintainability
• Collaborate closely with product managers, clinical stakeholders, and cross-functional engineering teams to translate complex healthcare requirements into reliable, compliant, and extensible software solutions
• Build and maintain secure, HIPAA-compliant systems that handle sensitive patient health information (ePHI) with the highest standards of data privacy, integrity, and regulatory compliance
• Drive performance, reliability, and observability improvements across services; proactively identify and resolve systemic issues before they impact patients or pharmacists
• Develop and govern integrations with third-party healthcare systems, PBM platforms, and clinical data networks using industry-standard protocols (HL7, FHIR, NCPDP/EDI)
• Champion engineering best practices across the team — code quality, CI/CD, automated testing, observability, security, and tech debt management
• Mentor and uplift SE-II / SE-III engineers through code reviews, pairing, design guidance, and constructive feedback
• Adhere to Company policies, procedures, mission, values, and standards of ethics and integrity

What you'll bring:

• 6–8 years of professional software engineering experience with a strong full-stack background

• Backend: Java & Spring Boot (Advanced),  Expert-level Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Security (JWT / OAuth2 / RBAC), Spring Data JPA / Hibernate, reactive programming (Spring WebFlux), async processing, multi-threading, and CompletableFuture
• System Design & Architecture: Proven ability to design scalable, resilient, and distributed systems; strong grasp of microservices, API gateway patterns, event-driven architecture (Kafka), CQRS basics, and distributed system trade-offs
• Frontend: React & TypeScript (Advanced) — Expert-level Hooks, custom hook authoring, advanced state management (Redux Toolkit / Zustand / React Query), performance optimization (memoization, code splitting, lazy loading), TypeScript generics and utility types
• REST & API Design — API versioning, idempotency, pagination, error contracts, OpenAPI / Swagger; experience with GraphQL or gRPC is a plus
• Database: Advanced SQL (CTEs, window functions, EXPLAIN plans), PostgreSQL / MySQL schema design at scale, indexing strategies, ORM optimization, connection pooling (HikariCP); working knowledge of NoSQL (Cassandra, Redis, MongoDB)
• Healthcare Domain Awareness — Familiarity with HIPAA / HITECH compliance, PHI / ePHI handling, and healthcare interoperability standards (HL7 v2, FHIR R4, NCPDP / X12 EDI) is a strong advantage
• DevOps & Observability: Docker, Kubernetes (deployments, HPA, resource tuning), CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins / GitHub Actions / Concord), distributed tracing, structured logging, and metrics dashboards (Grafana / Prometheus / Splunk / Dynatrace)
• Testing & Code Quality: TDD / BDD advocate; JUnit 5 + Mockito + Testcontainers; React Testing Library + Jest; sonar compliance and tech debt prioritization
• Soft Skills: Technical leadership, clear communication of trade-offs to product and stakeholders, strong mentoring instinct, collaborative, high ownership mindset
