Position Summary
A&L Engraving is seeking a dependable, detail-oriented Laser/Rotary Engraving Technician to produce industrial tags, identification plates, control-panel labels, signage, nameplates, and other custom engraved products.
This position is responsible for reviewing work orders, preparing artwork, setting up and operating laser and rotary engraving equipment, inspecting finished products, and completing orders accurately and on schedule. The ideal candidate is mechanically inclined, comfortable with computers, and committed to producing precise, high-quality work.
Primary Responsibilities
- Review work orders, customer drawings, specifications, proofs, and production instructions.
- Confirm material, dimensions, quantity, color, text, layout, hole locations, edge requirements, and other specifications before production.
- Set up and operate CO2 lasers, fiber lasers, rotary engravers, and related production equipment.
- Engrave, mark, and cut plastic, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, and other approved materials.
- Select and install the proper engraving cutters, tools, collets, fixtures, and material-holding devices.
- Set engraving depth, spindle speed, feed rate, cutter path, laser power, laser speed, frequency, focus, and other machine parameters.
- Prepare and position materials to ensure proper alignment and secure holding during production.
- Create, edit, and prepare artwork and machine files using engraving, graphics, and laser-control software.
- Import and work with PDF, DXF, DWG, AI, EPS, SVG, and common image-file formats.
- Perform test engravings to verify settings, depth, alignment, appearance, and readability.
- Color-fill rotary-engraved lettering and graphics when required.
- Cut materials and prepare blanks for engraving.
- Drill or punch mounting holes and complete beveling, deburring, cleaning, and other finishing operations.
- Inspect finished products for spelling, dimensions, engraving depth, alignment, color, readability, finish, and overall appearance.
- Compare completed work with the approved proof, drawing, and work order before releasing it.
- Organize multiple jobs to maintain production flow and meet customer deadlines.
- Accurately record completed quantities, production time, material usage, and rejected parts.
- Package and label completed orders to prevent damage, loss, or mix-ups.
- Perform routine cleaning and preventive maintenance on lasers, lenses, rotary spindles, cutters, work surfaces, exhaust systems, and related equipment.
- Maintain an organized inventory of engraving cutters, tooling, fixtures, and commonly used materials.
- Report equipment problems, damaged tooling, material shortages, and order discrepancies promptly.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area.
- Follow all company procedures and safety requirements.
- Assist with other engraving, production, and shop duties as needed.
Quality Expectations
The Laser/Rotary Engraving Technician is expected to:
- Produce accurate work with close attention to spelling, numbers, dimensions, and customer specifications.
- Verify the correct material, cutter, tooling, fixture, and machine settings before processing an order.
- Stop and ask questions when information is incomplete, unclear, or inconsistent.
- Complete a test piece or first-piece inspection when required.
- Minimize scrap, rework, broken tooling, and wasted machine time.
- Protect customer-supplied files, drawings, and confidential information.
- Take responsibility for the quality of every completed order.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic computer skills and the ability to learn engraving and design software.
- Ability to read work orders, rulers, tape measures, calipers, and basic technical drawings.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Ability to identify spelling, numbering, layout, and dimensional errors.
- Good mechanical ability and hand-eye coordination.
- Good organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to manage several orders with different requirements and deadlines.
- Dependable attendance and willingness to work as part of a team.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Willingness to learn new equipment, materials, tooling, and production processes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience operating laser, rotary, CNC, routing, printing, or similar production equipment.
- Experience with CorelDRAW, Adobe Illustrator, LightBurn, EZCAD, or comparable software.
- Experience selecting and using rotary engraving cutters and tooling.
- Experience with vector artwork and technical drawing files.
- Familiarity with industrial identification tags, equipment plates, electrical labels, control-panel labels, legend plates, and safety signage.
- Experience with plastic, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, and other engraving materials.
- Experience working in a fast-paced custom manufacturing or job-shop environment.
Previous engraving experience is preferred but not required for a mechanically inclined candidate who is comfortable with computers and willing to learn.

Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and work at production equipment for extended periods.

- Ability to visually inspect small text, fine details, alignment, engraving depth, and finish quality.
- Ability to safely handle sheet materials, metal tags, plastics, cutters, and production tooling.
- Ability to work around machinery, production noise, fumes, chips, and moving equipment while using required personal protective equipment.

Work Environment
This position works primarily in an engraving and light-manufacturing environment. The technician regularly uses laser and rotary engraving equipment, computers, hand tools, measuring instruments, and material-preparation equipment.
