The Radiation Therapist operates and executes radiation therapies with expert knowledge of the capability of each therapy unit and the ability to perform any and all Radiation therapy treatments expertly. This includes skills in operating and performing various tasks in preparing, executing, and completing procedures within their Radiation therapy environment. This would include proper order review, basic and advanced treatment and set up parameters, knowledge of Radiation safety, regulatory compliance, sensitivity to patient clinical issues and needs, and excellent patient care.

License /Certification
Required:

Certified Radiologic Technologist (CRT) license in Therapeutic Radiologic Technology

BLS

Preferred: ARRT

Education
Preferred: Completion of an AMA approved program in Radiation Therapy Technology.

Experience
Preferred: Two years experience as a Radiation Therapy Technologist.
 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential

Explains treatment procedure to patient, means of communication during treatment and procedure to follow if emergency arises during treatment.

Maintains visual and audible communication with patient during treatment.

Schedules patients for the most effective machine-use of time.

Performs machine warm up.

Operates linear accelerator by setting appropriate controls on the console and activating the machine to deliver prescribed treatment indicated on the treatment plan while monitoring patient and equipment during treatment.

Coordinates with hospital floor and other healthcare personnel patient scheduling for in-patients

Follows established procedure for portal imaging.

Follows procedure for TLD measurements.

Simulates patients per established simulation procedures.

Performs quality assurance activities on treatment machine and simulator.

Performs chart check per established department policy.

Communicates patient's needs to physician, nurses or other members of the radiation oncology team.

Demonstrated empathy; maintains patient dignity.

Accurately enters patient charges.

Maintains cleanliness of the equipment, treatment room, and simulation room and consoles/ workstations.

Refers equipment problems to the field service engineer.

Ability to discern when to seek assistance in order to provide quality patient care and meet center's patient care objectives.

Maintains patient privacy, patient identity, and patient confidentiality and personnel information on current and former staff members. Must be aware of The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Radiation Therapist Quality Checklist to include: Verification of treatment consent, patient's face photo, and photographs of treatment fields. Verification treatment prescription, simulation and treatment identifies correct site/side of treatment. Review of electronic chart to verify uniformity between physician's prescription and treatment plan. Review of electronic chart to identify discrepancies in daily dose, fractionation and total dose. Review of images to trend reproducibility of patient treatment set ups. Review of electronic chart to identify areas for optimized code capture. Positions patient to reproduce set-up from simulator.



Additional

Is knowledgeable in performing hand calculations.

Fabricates immobilization devices, bolus, and customized shielding blocks.

Assists in the HDR program by operating ultrasound machine for volume studies for prostate implant patients.

Demonstrated active involvement in other brachytherapy procedures.

Participates in Quality Improvement studies.

Attends staff and technical meetings.

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and services appropriate to the population served on the assigned unit or work area. Knowledgeable of growth and development for all patient/family cultural, linguistic, spiritual, gender, and age specific needs. Able to effectively communicate and care for patient and family as reflected in the Plan for Provision of Care.

Pay Range

$50.24 -$75.36
