As part of Walmart's International Technology organization, we build scalable, cloud-native platforms that power retail and eCommerce experiences across the African continent.
The International Technology team delivers technology solutions that serve millions of customers across diverse, high-growth markets with unique infrastructure and connectivity challenges. Our teams own omni-channel commerce, supply chain, customer returns, and fulfilment systems — leveraged from Walmart global platform.
We are a team that thrives on solving hard engineering problems at scale — building resilient, distributed systems that perform reliably under varied network conditions.
What You'll Do
- Lead from the front technically — actively participate in architecture discussions, design reviews, and critical technical decisions. Be the person the team looks to for engineering clarity and direction.
- Own and drive the end-to-end technical design of services and platforms, setting high standards for scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
- Mentor and grow engineers through hands-on code reviews, design critiques, and engineering deep-dives — not just performance reviews.
- Identify and resolve technical debt, performance bottlenecks, and reliability risks proactively before they become production issues.
- Set and enforce engineering standards — code quality, test coverage, observability, and operational excellence across the team.
- Drive the team's adoption of modern distributed systems patterns — event-driven architecture, eventual consistency, resilient service mesh
- Ensure systems are engineered for resilience in low-bandwidth, high-latency environments.
- Attract, hire, and retain strong individual contributors — build a team culture where engineering excellence is the norm, not the exception.
- Stay current with the cutting edge — evaluate and champion the right technology choices for long-term platform health.
- Ensure the team delivers with pace, quality, and engineering depth — always.
What You'll Bring
Technical Depth (Non-Negotiable)
- 12+ years of hands-on software engineering experience, with a strong and current command of backend system design and development.
- Deep proficiency in Java and the Spring/Spring Boot ecosystem — capable of reviewing and contributing to production code.
- Expert-level understanding of distributed systems — CAP theorem trade-offs, consistency models, idempotency, distributed transactions, and failure modes in real-world, large-scale deployments.
- Strong working knowledge of event-driven architecture — Kafka or equivalent message streaming platforms, saga patterns, CQRS, and event sourcing.
- Extensive experience designing and operating cloud-native microservices on Microsoft Azure — AKS, Azure Service Bus, Azure Functions, Cosmos DB, and related services.
- Solid grasp of API design at scale — RESTful services, versioning strategies, backward compatibility, and contract-first design.
- Hands-on experience with both SQL and NoSQL databases — query optimization, schema design, indexing strategies, and appropriate technology selection.
- Deep understanding of system observability — distributed tracing (OpenTelemetry), structured logging, alerting, SLOs/SLAs, and incident post-mortems.
- Strong command of non-functional requirements — latency, throughput, fault tolerance, horizontal scalability, and graceful degradation under load.
- Proven ability to prototype and validate technical solutions — you write code when it matters and the team knows it.
- Strong experience with CI/CD pipelines — Git branching strategies, pipeline-as-code, artifact management, and blue-green or canary deployment patterns.
- Practical experience with container orchestration — Kubernetes at scale, Helm, resource quotas, pod disruption budgets, and production-grade cluster management.
- Strong knowledge of code quality practices — static analysis (SonarQube), unit and integration testing (JUnit, Spock), mutation testing, and test pyramid discipline.
- Strong experience leveraging AI/LLM in production and deriving measurable outcomes using the same.
- Experience with AI driving feature development and ability to operate with AI first mindset.
Engineering Leadership
- 3+ years managing engineering teams of 10–15 engineers, with clear ownership of technical delivery outcomes.
- Track record of raising the technical bar — establishing architecture review processes, engineering guilds, or design standards that outlast individual projects.
- Experience leading teams through greenfield platform builds and large-scale migrations — you've shipped hard things in production.
- Ability to translate ambiguous business problems into crisp technical problem statements and executable engineering plans.
- Strong at unblocking engineers technically — debugging complex production issues, reviewing architectural trade-offs, and cutting through ambiguity with decisive technical judgment.
- Experience working in distributed, multi-timezone engineering organizations — effective async communication and documentation practices.
Nice to Have
- Prior exposure to retail or supply chain domain systems — order management, inventory, returns, fulfilment.
- Experience engineering for low-bandwidth or intermittent-connectivity environments relevant to African or emerging market deployments.
- Familiarity with WCNP (Walmart Cloud Native Platform) or equivalent internal PaaS tooling.
