Legal Assistant — Federal Litigation Support

Locations: Kansas City, Missouri
Employment: Full-Time, Contract
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
Work Environment: On-site, U.S. Attorney’s Office

Position Summary

The Legal Assistant provides comprehensive legal and administrative support to Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) within the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Missouri. The position supports federal criminal and civil litigation through the preparation, processing, organization, and management of complex and time-sensitive legal documents and case materials.

The successful candidate must demonstrate excellent attention to detail, sound judgment, confidentiality, organizational ability, and the capacity to manage multiple priorities and deadlines with limited supervision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Examine, prepare, format, proofread, and process complex and time-sensitive legal documents.
  • Review incoming case materials and determine the appropriate preparation and assembly of complaints, motions, pleadings, orders, answers, subpoenas, warrants, and other litigation documents.
  • Obtain information from case files, courts, law enforcement agencies, and other authorized sources to prepare complete legal documents for AUSA review or authorized court submission.
  • Prepare recurring criminal and civil legal documents, including:
    • Indictments and complaints
    • Motions and pleadings
    • Search and seizure warrants
    • Judgments and garnishments
    • Applications and notices
    • Affidavits and summonses
    • Grand jury and deposition subpoenas
    • Orders to show cause
    • Satisfactions of judgment
    • Proofs of claim
  • Ensure documents comply with applicable court rules, formatting requirements, and legal procedures.
  • Support trial preparation by compiling trial notebooks, organizing case materials, preparing jury instructions, and assembling witness and exhibit lists.
  • Assemble exhibits, affidavits, evidentiary materials, and supporting documentation for hearings, trials, and other proceedings.
  • Use legal research tools and online databases to verify citations, statutory references, and case authorities.
  • Prepare tables of contents, indices, and citation tables for briefs and other court filings.
  • Draft correspondence involving legal procedures and terminology, including transmittal letters, extension requests, case-status notifications, communications with federal agencies, and notices to counsel.
  • Respond professionally to inquiries from attorneys, court personnel, law enforcement agencies, visitors, and members of the public while appropriately referring complex or urgent matters to an AUSA.
  • Open, update, monitor, and close matters using automated case-management and tracking systems.
  • Maintain accurate case records and conduct database searches to retrieve case information.
  • Track filing deadlines, hearings, trials, depositions, interviews, scheduling conferences, and other litigation milestones.
  • Maintain reliable calendaring and suspense systems and alert AUSAs to upcoming deadlines and court appearances.
  • Manage AUSA calendars, appointments, meetings, interviews, and conferences.
  • Protect sensitive information and maintain strict confidentiality at all times.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a professional office environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat Professional.
  • Experience with word processing, document management/review, electronic file-management systems, and data entry.
  • Ability to integrate information from multiple software applications, including tables, charts, graphs, databases, and spreadsheets, into documents.
  • Proficiency with standard office technology, including computers, multifunction printers/copiers, and scanners.
  • Strong organizational, time-management, and multitasking skills.
  • Ability to prioritize assignments and consistently meet established deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision in a fast-paced professional environment.

Mandatory Federal Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must successfully complete, at minimum, a Tier 2 background investigation.
  • Must submit Standard Form 86 (SF-86) before commencing on-site work.
  • Must be capable of handling Sensitive But Unclassified (SBU) information and maintaining the confidentiality of federal case information.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate has prior legal-support, litigation-support, law-firm, court, government, or similar professional experience and is comfortable handling detailed legal documentation under strict deadlines. Experience supporting attorneys, maintaining case files, docketing matters, and preparing litigation documents is highly desirable.
