Job Title: Lead Embedded Software Engineer
The Role:
As a Lead Embedded Software Engineer, you will serve as Dyson's software delivery leader and primary software owner for JDM-developed software within connected electronic products. This role combines the responsibilities of a Technical Lead and JDM Software Governance Lead, ensuring successful delivery of embedded software from concept through production.
Working closely with the Embedded Software Architect, you will translate product requirements, business objectives, and customer needs into executable software plans and technical deliverables. While the Software Architect owns the software architecture, technical strategy, safety, and security direction, you will own software execution, prioritization, supplier leadership, technical coordination, and delivery management.
You will lead Dyson's engagement with JDM software engineering teams, providing governance to ensure all software development activities comply with Dyson architecture, engineering standards, security requirements, quality expectations, and project milestones. You will act as the key interface between Dyson engineering teams, JDM software teams, project stakeholders, and business functions, driving alignment and delivery throughout the development lifecycle.
This role requires strong technical leadership, excellent embedded software knowledge, supplier management experience, and the ability to drive software delivery across multiple organizations in a fast-paced product development environment.
This role will be based at the Dyson Shenzhen Office and/or JDM supplier sites, depending on project needs. The successful candidate should be willing to travel and work onsite at JDM locations as required to support architecture reviews, technical alignment, development activities, integration, and product delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Define software product requirements, roadmaps, user stories, and acceptance criteria in collaboration with stakeholders.
- Own software backlogs, prioritization, release planning, scope management, and roadmap execution.
- Ensure software work packages are clearly defined, estimated, prioritized, and aligned with program milestones.
- Translate business, customer, and regulatory needs into executable software deliverables.
- Lead embedded software development, integration, testing, validation, and release activities.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance to JDM software teams throughout the product lifecycle.
- Review technical solutions to ensure compliance with architecture, coding standards, security, and quality requirements.
- Act as Dyson’s primary software lead for JDM partners, owning delivery commitments, priorities, and performance.
- Govern software execution through technical, quality, and milestone reviews while managing risks, technical debt, and delivery issues.
- Drive continuous improvement in supplier engineering capability, development processes, testing effectiveness, and delivery performance.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to manage dependencies, resolve issues, and support successful product delivery.
- Communicate software progress, risks, quality metrics, and delivery status to stakeholders and leadership teams.
Key Skills / Experience
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline.
- Proven experience leading software development projects involving JDM, ODM, OEM, EMS, or external development partners.
- Strong proficiency in embedded C/C++ software development.
- Strong understanding of embedded software architecture and design principles.
- Experience with RTOS-based embedded systems and MCU platforms.
- Strong knowledge of communication interfaces and protocols including I2C, SPI, UART, BLE, Wi-Fi, MQTT, and related technologies.
- Experience with hardware-software integration, board bring-up, debugging, and system validation.
- Familiarity with embedded Linux environments and software build systems.
- Experience using Git and modern software development workflows.
- Understanding of OTA updates, cloud connectivity, software security principles, and secure coding practices.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and software quality practices.
- Strong understanding of Agile/Scrum software development methodologies.
- Proven experience managing product backlogs, software roadmaps, feature prioritization, and release planning.
