Job Description
Summary
The Electrical Engineer at PROPWR is a member of the PWRLIVE Center, PROPWR’s real-time engineering, field engineering, and asset reliability team. The primary focus of this role is supporting PWRLIVE Center during power system faults and events, protective relay coordination, and electrical troubleshooting support for power generation and distribution equipment. The electrical engineer will analyze relay event records and system data to determine root cause, guide field personnel through electrical troubleshooting, and drive corrective actions that improve asset reliability. In addition, the engineer will support the design, integration, and testing of electrical equipment at the system and sub-system levels, including troubleshooting documentation, integration drawings, and pre-installation testing.
Responsibilities
PWRLIVE Center Support
- Serve as an electrical engineering resource for the PWRLIVE Center, providing real-time and remote troubleshooting support to field personnel for in-service generation and electrical equipment.
- Analyze faults, trips, and abnormal operating events using relay event reports, oscillography, sequence-of-events records, and SCADA/historian data to determine root cause and recommend corrective actions.
- Develop, review, and maintain protective relay settings and logic for generator, transformer, feeder, and bus protection.
- Perform and maintain protection coordination studies, including time-current curves, to ensure selective and reliable operation of protective devices.
- Perform short-circuit and fault current calculations and verify equipment ratings; support arc flash studies as needed.
- Support relay testing and commissioning, including settings verification, secondary injection testing, and review of test results.
- Lead and support root cause analysis for electrical failures and recurring events; document findings and track corrective actions through closure.
- Identify trends in electrical events and equipment performance and recommend improvements to protection schemes, settings, and operating practices to improve fleet reliability.
- Develop and maintain PWRLIVE Center technical resources, including:
- Electrical troubleshooting guides and decision trees
- Fault and event analysis reports
- Relay settings records and protection documentation
- Lessons learned and technical bulletins for field personnel
- Provide training and technical guidance to field and PWRLIVE Center personnel on protective relaying, fault response, and electrical troubleshooting practices.
Engineering & Project Support
- Support systems design, integration, and testing of various equipment types.
- Provide technical support for integration testing and commissioning of equipment at the system and sub-system levels.
- Participate in electrical and power systems engineering projects and initiatives.
- Assist in developing milestones and tracking progress to meet project objectives.
- Develop and update documentation on a system and sub-system level, including:
- Equipment SOPs
- Single-line and three-line diagrams
- Integration testing procedures
- Assist with medium voltage cable assembly design and interconnection methods.
- Collaborate with vendors and third-party suppliers, including relay and switchgear manufacturers, to ensure technical requirements are met and to resolve equipment issues.
- Work closely with senior engineers to learn and apply protection and power systems principles, analysis tools, and project management practices.
- Partner with stakeholders within PROPWR and ProPetro, including Field Operations, Engineering, and Project Execution, to address technical challenges and support operational goals.
- Identify potential technical risks and assist in developing mitigation strategies.
- Maintain compliance with Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies, attending all required HSE training sessions, safety meetings, and using proper PPE at all times.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering required; Master’s or PhD preferred. EIT certification preferred; PE is a plus.
- 4+ years’ experience with electrical systems, including protective relaying, fault analysis, and electrical troubleshooting.
- Working knowledge of protective relaying principles and protection schemes, including common ANSI device functions (e.g., 50/51, 87, 27/59, 81, 32, 40, 25).
- Experience with SEL microprocessor-based protective relays and meters (e.g., SEL-751, SEL-700G, SEL-735) is preferred.
- Experience with SEL software, including AcSELerator QuickSet for relay settings and SynchroWAVe for event analysis, is preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret relay event reports, oscillography, and COMTRADE files.
- Understanding symmetrical and asymmetrical components, short-circuit analysis, and protection coordination.
- Experience with power system analysis software (e.g., ETAP, PSCAD, PowerFactory) is preferred.
- Understanding of the NEC; familiarity with NESC, NFPA 70E, and IEEE C37 standards is preferred.
- Experience developing and interpreting single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, and AC/DC control schematics.
- Exposure to AC systems up to 38kV and DC systems up to 120V.
- Experience with reciprocating generators or turbines, generator protection, or paralleling switchgear is a plus.
- Ability to lead root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
- Experience in field operations and troubleshooting of medium voltage equipment preferred.
- Skilled in using electrical measurement devices, instrumentation, and tools; experience with relay test sets (e.g., Doble, Omicron, Megger) is preferred.
- Familiarity with SCADA, PLCs, and industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, DNP3, IEC 61850) is a plus.
- Proficient with Visio, SmartDraw, or similar diagramming tools; familiarity with electrical CAD software is preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and other standard engineering software.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to communicate clearly with field personnel during time-sensitive events.
- Strong sense of ownership, collaborative mindset, and willingness to learn.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.
- Willingness to travel within the Permian Basin (West Texas and Southeast New Mexico) as needed.
