Description
Who We Are
With over 20 years of specialty and over a decade of experience in emergency medicine, Metropolitan Veterinary Specialists & Emergency Service (MVSES) provides exceptional veterinary care throughout the large Louisville area, state of Kentucky, southern Indiana and surrounding areas.
Bring your skills and compassion to the patients who depend on consistent, attentive care. MVSES is seeking experienced Veterinary Treatment Technicians and Veterinary Assistants to join our Treatment Team, which cares for hospitalized patients across all departments. This role offers the opportunity to use your current skills, learn new techniques, and work closely with veterinarians and fellow nursing team members.
The care you will provide
Our Treatment Team delivers timely nursing care, treatments, and daily comfort to patients with a wide range of medical needs. Responsibilities are assigned according to your role, credentials, training, and demonstrated competency, with appropriate veterinary direction and supervision.
- Follow electronic treatment plans, complete timely assigned care, and communicate patient needs and changes promptly.
- Monitor patient comfort, behavior, appetite, and vital signs; recognize abnormalities and notify the supervising technician or veterinarian.
- Provide safe, compassionate handling and restraint, feeding as directed, clean bedding, patient repositioning, and other daily care.
- Assist with sample collection, diagnostics, outpatient treatments, and patient preparation for procedures.
- Support specialty departments as needed and help maintain continuity of care between teams and shifts.
- Maintain accurate medical records and treatment documentation, and ensure services and supplies are recorded for billing.
- Keep treatment areas, kennels, equipment, and supplies clean, sanitary, organized, and stocked; follow isolation and infection-prevention protocols.
- Assist with cleaning, lubricating, packing, and sterilizing instruments according to hospital training and safety procedures.
Technical responsibilities and development
Technicians with the appropriate training and competency may also perform venipuncture, place and maintain IV and urinary catheters, administer prescribed medications and fluids, monitor infusion pumps, obtain blood pressure and ECG readings, and assist with diagnostic radiography. Additional responsibilities may include anesthesia monitoring, recovery care, bandaging, and medication or fluid calculations.
Veterinary Assistants support these activities under appropriate supervision while developing their patient-care and technical skills. All team members follow medication safety, radiation safety, controlled-substance handling, and hospital documentation protocols relevant to their assigned duties.
What you bring
- At least one year of experience as a veterinary technician or veterinary assistant.
- A high school diploma or equivalent. Veterinary technician credentials and veterinary technology education are preferred for technician candidates.
- Knowledge of safe patient restraint, animal behavior, and basic veterinary medications and administration techniques appropriate to your experience.
- Dependability, attention to detail, and a commitment to completing treatments accurately and on time.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to prioritize changing patient needs while maintaining composure.
- A willingness to learn, accept feedback, and collaborate with colleagues across departments.
- Basic computer proficiency; experience with electronic medical records and treatment plans is helpful.
Schedule and compensation
- Full-time, on-site position with first and second-shift opportunities and flexible scheduling.
- Rotating weekend shifts are part of the schedule and include an hourly shift differential.
- Starting pay from $18 per hour, with compensation based on experience and qualifications.
A Shift in Motion
You arrive to a crisp handoff and a board full of patients that can change in a heartbeat. The pace is thrilling: you move from room to room checking trends, updating notes, and syncing with teammates so nothing gets missed. Between scheduled treatments, you pivot for add-ons, urgent rechecks, and quick consults-always keeping communication clear and calm for the next handoff. First and second shifts keep your week dynamic, and rotating weekends add variety (with a differential). By the end of the day, you've helped turn uncertainty into stability-then you pass the torch with clean, tight updates that set the next shift up to win.
Training and growth
MVSES provides standardized on-site training in procedures, laboratory diagnostics, equipment, medical math and RECOVER emergency certification. Department training supports consistent care and provides a path to build additional skills. Team members complete the training and competency assessments appropriate to their assigned position. Continuing education helps you expand your clinical knowledge and contribute confidently to the Treatment Team.
Benefits
- 100% employer paid group health insurance. Dental and vision options available.
- Paid time off and flexible scheduling.
- Annual continuing education allowance with paid time off.
- Paid KY State license and professional membership
- Uniform allowance and employee pet care discounts.
- 401(k) with employer matching.
The work environment
This is an active hospital role that involves extended standing and walking, bending, kneeling, safe animal handling, and lifting approximately 50 pounds, with assistance for heavier loads. Team members follow safety procedures when working around animals, infectious materials, medications, radiology and cleaning or sterilization agents. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions.
