PURPOSE
The Housekeeping Lead serves as an active, hands-on shift leader and the primary on-site point of contact for evening housekeeping operations. This role bridges the gap between evening staff and facility management to ensure efficient, high-quality cleaning services. The Lead ensures a safe, clean, and orderly environment that reflects the standards and mission of Rockhurst High School.
Responsibilities
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage and Lead Housekeeping Staff. This role will lead by example while performing evening cleaning duties; assist the Facilities Supervisor with onboarding and training the evening housekeeping staff on standard cleaning routines and expectations.
- Acts as the liaison between the Facilities Supervisor and night housekeeping shifts to ensure consistent flow of responsibilities.
- The Housekeeping team will be responsible for cleaning and sanitizing classrooms, hallways, restrooms, cafeteria, gymnasium, and other areas within the school. This includes vacuuming, mopping, sweeping, dusting, window cleaning, and disinfecting surfaces.
- Cleaning of toilets, sinks, baths, showers, and also the cleaning of bodily fluids from all surfaces, as dictated by local procedures.
- Assist Facilities Supervisor with the monitoring of inventory levels and ordering of cleaning supplies, equipment, and inventory supply to ensure availability when needed.
- Provide event support by assisting with set up and cleaning up after school events, meetings, and other gatherings.
- Assist with the supervision of work grant program participants.
- Assist Facilities Supervisor with establishing summer work schedule through and monitor work completion of the team.
- Safety and Security. Lead will perform nightly perimeter and safety checks to ensure that exits, stairways, and pathways are clear and accessible. The lead will verify that all rooms and doors are locked prior to departure.
- Collaboration and Communication. The Lead of Housekeeper will work with faculty, staff, and administrators to address cleaning needs and communicate any issues or concerns related to the school’s maintenance and cleanliness to the Facilities Supervisor or Director of Facility Management.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Qualifications
- Minimum of 2-3 years experience in custodial or janitorial work is required, with prior experience in a lead or senior housekeeper role preferred.. Familiarity with cleaning techniques, equipment, and safety protocols is valuable, especially in a school or institutional setting. Knowledge of cleaning procedures: Understanding various cleaning procedures, including sanitizing, floor care, disinfecting, and maintaining cleanliness in classrooms, restrooms, hallways, offices, gyms, and common areas.
- Ability to train and mentor housekeeping staff.
- Time management: Being able to effectively manage time and prioritize tasks to ensure all cleaning duties are completed within designated timeframes.
- Communication skills: Effective communication skills are necessary to collaborate with colleagues, faculty, other staff members, and Facilities Supervisor. Clear communication helps address any specific cleaning needs or concerns.
- Safety awareness: Knowledge of safety protocols and the ability to adhere to them to create a safe environment for students, staff, and visitors. This includes proper handling and storage of cleaning chemicals and understanding emergency procedures.
- Attention to detail: A keen eye for detail and the ability to maintain a high standard of cleanliness throughout the school environment. This includes ensuring floors are properly cleaned, surfaces are dust free, and trash is properly disposed of.
- Flexibility and adaptability: Being adaptable to different cleaning needs and schedules, as custodial work may involve occasional evening or weekend shifts, especially during events or maintenance projects.
- Ability to lift, bend, stand, and perform physical tasks associated with housekeeping duties.
All employees are required to take reasonable care to avoid accidents or injuries, which could cause harm to them or other people. Use all protective equipment and clothing as provided by the Housekeeping Department for the safe completion of your duties. All staff are required to comply with the Maintenance Departments Health and Safety guidelines.
- High school diploma or the equivalent.
- Must have a valid driver license.
- Ability and suitability to work in a school centered environment.
- Must complete VIRTUS training.
This position is regularly scheduled Monday – Friday, 2:30 pm – 11:00 pm with the possibility of overtime to cover special events on the weekends.
