Role Purpose

As Vice President, Construction and Maintenance, you will lead the end-to-end construction, maintenance and facilities agenda across a large-scale, multi-site retail and travel center portfolio. This role is accountable for ensuring bp’s physical network is safe, reliable, operationally resilient, cost-effective and positioned to support long-term commercial growth.

 

You will oversee construction project delivery, capital planning, maintenance strategy, facilities reliability, contractor performance, repair and maintenance spend, and the execution of site investment programs. Working closely with Operations, Merchandising, Food, Fuel, Real Estate, Finance, Procurement, HSSE, Legal and Technology leaders, you will ensure construction and maintenance priorities are aligned to enterprise strategy, customer experience, operational needs and financial commitments.

 

This role requires strong enterprise leadership across a complex asset base where decisions directly impact safety, customer experience, uptime, brand standards, capital efficiency and field execution. You will establish clear governance, decision rights, performance routines and accountability mechanisms so that construction and maintenance work is prioritized, delivered and sustained with rigor.

 

You will also play a critical leadership role in modernizing how construction and maintenance capabilities support the business. This includes improving project delivery, strengthening preventative maintenance programs, driving vendor and contractor accountability, creating clearer insight to asset performance and maintenance spend, and partnering across the organization to ensure physical site investments generate measurable value.

 

Key Accountabilities

Construction strategy and capital program delivery

• Own the construction strategy and capital delivery roadmap across the assigned retail and travel center network, ensuring projects are aligned to enterprise priorities, customer needs, safety requirements and financial returns.
• Lead the planning and execution of new builds, remodels, refreshes, major site investments, food and merchandising projects, fuel infrastructure activity, facility upgrades and other construction programs.
• Establish disciplined governance for project prioritization, scope control, schedule management, budget management, risk mitigation and collaborator decision-making.
• Ensure construction projects are delivered safely, efficiently and in compliance with bp standards, regulatory requirements, permitting expectations and applicable site operating constraints.
• Partner with Real Estate, Operations, Merchandising, Food, Fuel, Finance and Strategy teams to sequence capital work in a way that optimizes commercial value, minimizes disruption and supports long-term network growth.

Maintenance, reliability and asset performance

• Lead the maintenance strategy for the physical asset base, ensuring sites are safe, reliable, guest-ready and able to support consistent operational execution.
• Build and strengthen preventative maintenance, reactive maintenance, asset reliability and facilities performance programs to reduce downtime, improve customer experience and manage total cost of ownership.
• Create access to maintenance spend, recurring failure points, asset lifecycle risks and operational difficulties so the business can make informed investment and repair decisions.
• Drive improvement in work order management, response times, vendor performance, field communication and issue escalation across the maintenance ecosystem.
• Ensure maintenance priorities support safe operations, site uptime, brand standards, food and fuel offer execution, and the overall customer and guest experience.

Contractor, vendor and partner management

• Oversee contractor, vendor and service provider performance across construction, maintenance, facilities and related project activity.
• Set clear expectations for safety, quality, cost, timing, compliance, service levels and issue resolution.
• Partner with Procurement, Legal, HSSE and Finance to ensure supplier strategies, contracts, controls and performance routines are fit for purpose and support business outcomes.
• Strengthen contractor accountability through performance scorecards, governance forums, partner concern routines and corrective action plans.
• Develop a vendor ecosystem that can support speed, consistency, quality and scalability across a geographically dispersed network.

Operational partnership and field execution

• Serve as the senior leader accountable for connecting construction and maintenance decisions with operating realities in the field.
• Partner closely with Operations and site leadership to prioritize work, manage disruption, resolve issues and ensure projects and maintenance activity support the needs of customers, team members and operators.
• Establish clear communication routines so field leaders understand planned work, project impacts, maintenance priorities, critical issue paths and expected outcomes.
• Support business continuity, emergency response and critical issue resolution when asset, maintenance or construction matters affect operations.
• Ensure construction and maintenance teams operate with a practical understanding of site-level execution, labor realities, guest impact, safety expectations and commercial trade-offs.

Financial, governance and risk management

• Own financial rigor across construction and maintenance budgets, including capital planning, repair and maintenance spend, forecasting, tracking, reporting and performance management.
• Drive transparency to project costs, maintenance trends, vendor spend, change orders, capital efficiency and return on investment.
• Establish governance routines that support disciplined decision-making, clear accountability, and the timely surfacing of risks, trade-offs, and barriers.
• Ensure compliance with bp policies, HSSE requirements, control expectations, permitting requirements, regulatory obligations and ethical standards.
• Use data, analytics and performance insights to find opportunities to reduce cost, improve reliability, prioritize capital investment and strengthen execution.

Team leadership and capability building

• Build, lead and develop a high-performing construction and maintenance organization with clear accountabilities, strong technical capability and a shared commitment to safety, reliability and operational excellence.
• Clarify roles, decision rights and ways of working across direct reports, matrixed partners, field teams, contractors and enabling functions.
• Create a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, collaboration and disciplined execution.
• Strengthen succession, leadership capability and technical expertise across project management, facilities, maintenance, reliability, vendor management and capital delivery.
• Lead through influence across a complex organization, aligning senior collaborators around priorities, trade-offs and execution requirements.

 

What you will need to be successful

• Significant senior leadership experience in construction, maintenance, facilities, engineering, capital projects, asset management, real estate development, retail operations or a closely related multi-site operating environment.
• Demonstrated experience leading large-scale construction, maintenance or capital programs across geographically dispersed assets, preferably in retail, convenience, fuel, travel center, hospitality, restaurant, logistics or other operationally intensive businesses.
• Strong understanding of construction project management, facilities maintenance, preventative maintenance, asset reliability, contractor management, capital planning, permitting, safety standards and operational execution.
• Proven ability to manage significant capital and operating budgets, including forecasting, cost control, investment prioritization, vendor spend management and return-on-investment.
• Experience establishing governance routines, performance metrics, scorecards, escalation pathways and accountability mechanisms across complex direct and matrixed teams.
• Strong HSSE approach with demonstrated ability to embed safety, compliance, quality and risk management into construction and maintenance activity
• Ability to translate business strategy, customer experience priorities and operational needs into practical construction and maintenance plans.
• Proven ability to lead through influence across Operations, Real Estate, Merchandising, Food, Fuel, Finance, Procurement, Legal, Technology, P&C and field leadership teams.
• Strong commercial and operational judgement, with the ability to make disciplined trade-offs across cost, speed, quality, safety, guest impact and long-term asset performance.
• Experience improving maintenance systems, work order processes, vendor performance, project delivery or asset reliability programs is preferred.
• Demonstrated success building and developing high-performing teams, creating role clarity and fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, inclusion and continuous improvement.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience (to include senior leadership experience); advanced degree or relevant technical, engineering, construction management, facilities or project management qualification preferred where relevant.

You will work closely with the USCM CEO, TA CEO, Operations leadership, Real Estate, Merchandising, Food, Fuel, Finance, Procurement, HSSE, Legal, Technology, P&C, field leaders, site teams, contractors, vendors and external partners.

How much do we pay (Base)? ($150,000 - $200,000) *Note that the pay range listed for this position is a genuinely expected and reasonable estimate of the range of possible base compensation at the time of posting. This position is eligible for US Benefits – Select. This position offers paid vacation depending on your years of relevant industry experience and will range from 120 – 240 hours of vacation per year for full time employees (60 - 240 hours of vacation per year for part time employees). You will also be eligible for 9 paid holidays per year and 2 personal choice holidays.
