Overview
The Education Department of the Yale Center for British Art (YCBA) is seeking an Educator for secondary school, college, and university audiences. Reporting to the Head of Education, this position will cultivate and strengthen the YCBA's relationship with Greater New Haven secondary schools, colleges, and universities, and develop opportunities for their students and educators to engage with the museum as a resource for teaching, learning, professional development, and social gathering. Through innovative museum-based engagement and teaching practices, the post-holder will encourage students and educators to make use of the YCBA’s collections and spaces in ways that support curiosity and learning and allow them to explore their own lives and the world through art.
Working closely with faculty, teachers, and students in Greater New Haven, as well as colleagues in the YCBA’s Research Department, Study Room, and Reference Library, this role supports both the integration of the YCBA into local learning and engagement and the development of co-curricular pathways that foster students' intellectual, professional, and personal growth. Through mentorship and sustained relationship-building, the Educator oversees and expands opportunities for interacting with the museum and its collections, including through cross-institutional initiatives and internships for students in the city and at Yale.
The post-holder will expand our partnerships with secondary schools, colleges, and universities by providing new opportunities for curriculum development and teacher training in object based learning and by creating and facilitating curricular visits using input from school staff and faculty. They will also oversee existing programs that support visitor engagement, such as teacher workshops, the summer teacher institute, instructional webinars, summer art programs, and writing and photography classes and competitions.
The YCBA is a world leader in the study and display of British art and culture and is uniquely positioned to serve both public and academic audiences.
This is a fixed duration position of 18 months starting from the date of hire.
Specific Duties
Strategizes ways to build reciprocal relationships between the YCBA and the Greater New Haven community.
Prioritizes diversity and inclusion in programming and teaching practices.
Strongly advocates for the integration of YCBA collections into teaching across disciplines.
Oversees existing and new programs that support community engagement with original works of art.
Grows collaborative relationships with a wide range of New Haven high schools, community colleges, and universities.
Represents the YCBA in the national and international museum community to share innovative collaborations.
Supervises students, fellows, interns when needed.

Required Skills and Abilities

4. Excellent organization and management skills.
5. Previous experience with and expertise in high school and college teaching in art, art-historical or object-focused research, and community engagement.
Principal Responsibilities
1. Strategizes and strongly advocates for the integration of a collection or collections into teaching across the Yale curriculum. 2. Conceives and oversees programs that support faculty teaching from original works of art, including faculty seminars, workshops, and study days. 3. Grows collaborative relationships based on teaching from the collection(s) with a wide range of academic departments and programs. 4. Conceives and facilitates object study sessions, working closely on specific faculty collaborations that support the interdisciplinary growth of academic affairs in ways that strengthen future partnerships. 5. Conducts preparatory research necessary to ensure best practices in how faculty use the collection with their students. 6. Collaborates with other museums and other collections at Yale for teaching purposes. 7. Collaborates with Education staff to develop a pedagogical and philosophical approach to teaching with objects and cross-disciplinary thinking. 8. Represents the University in the national and international academic museum community for the purpose of sharing research and developments in museum-based course collaborations. 9. Supervise departmental staff, including assigned fellows and interns. 10. Other duties, as assigned. Required Education and Experience Master’s Degree in Arts, Art History, Education or related field and five years of professional museum experience in the areas of education or curatorial or an equivalent education and experience. Comprehensive knowledge related to one or more collection areas.
