Controls Engineer

Description

The Controls Engineer is responsible for the design, development, integration, validation, and support of electrical and control systems for automated manufacturing equipment and industrial automation projects. This role develops machine controls solutions from concept through implementation while ensuring systems are reliable, safe, maintainable, and aligned with customer and operational requirements.

The position works closely with Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, Setup, and Project Management teams to support successful project execution, equipment commissioning, troubleshooting, and customer support activities. Controls Engineers contribute to all phases of the automation lifecycle including design, programming, documentation, integration, validation, startup, and field support.

This role also supports continuous improvement initiatives, evaluates emerging technologies, and contributes to development of standardized engineering practices and operational efficiencies across MMCC’s automation systems and product offerings.

Controls Design &   Engineering

• Design electrical, pneumatic, and fluid control systems for automated manufacturing equipment and industrial automation projects. 
• Develop electrical schematics, control layouts, and machine documentation utilizing engineering design software. 
• Design and program PLC, HMI, robot, drive, and safety control systems. 
• Prepare technical documentation, specifications, bills of material, and supporting engineering documentation. 
• Develop and validate control system architectures to ensure safe and reliable machine operation. 
• Collaborate with Mechanical Engineering and other technical disciplines to support integrated automation solutions. 
• Research and evaluate new technologies, control methods, and automation solutions to support operational and product development initiatives. 

Integration,   Validation & Troubleshooting

• Support manufacturing and controls installation activities throughout equipment build and integration processes. 
• Integrate, validate, and troubleshoot machine controls, robotic systems, safety circuits, and automation equipment. 
• Perform commissioning, startup, runoff, and validation activities both internally and at customer facilities. 
• Diagnose and resolve electrical, controls, software, and automation-related issues. 
• Provide technical support for field service, customer troubleshooting, and operational support activities. 
• Support machine modifications, upgrades, and process improvements as required. 

Project &   Operational Support

• Coordinate activities with Engineering, Manufacturing, Setup, and Project Management teams to support project schedules and deliverables. 
• Assist with project planning, scheduling, forecasting, and engineering workload management. 
• Support customer communications related to technical requirements, troubleshooting, and project execution. 
• Participate in design reviews, project meetings, and continuous improvement initiatives. 
• Contribute to development and refinement of engineering standards, best practices, and operational procedures. 

Safety &   Continuous Improvement

• Design and validate machine safety systems in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and industry best practices. 
• Support compliance with electrical, machine safety, and guarding standards including OSHA, A3/RIA, NFPA, ANSI, and related requirements. 
• Maintain organized workspaces, engineering files, and project documentation. 
• Participate in continuous improvement initiatives related to engineering efficiency, machine performance, and operational processes. 
• Promote safe work practices both internally and at customer facilities.

Requirements

Required:

• Experience designing, programming, integrating, or troubleshooting industrial control systems and automation equipment. 
• Working knowledge of PLCs, HMIs, drives, safety systems, and industrial automation technologies. 
• Ability to interpret electrical schematics, technical drawings, and engineering documentation. 
• Strong troubleshooting and analytical problem-solving skills. 
• Effective communication and collaboration skills across technical and operational teams. 
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines. 
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and engineering software tools. 
• Ability and willingness to travel for customer support, commissioning, and field service activities. 
• Ability and willingness to work overtime

Preferred:

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related technical field. 
• Experience with AutoCAD Electrical or similar electrical design software. 
• Experience with Allen Bradley, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Omron, Keyence or similar PLC and automation platforms. 
• Experience integrating industrial robots including Fanuc, Yaskawa, ABB, KUKA, Panasonic, Kawasaki, or similar systems. 
• Familiarity with NEC, NFPA, OSHA, ANSI, ISO, A3/RIA and machine safety standards. 
• Experience in welding automation, robotic automation, or industrial manufacturing environments. 
• Understanding of pneumatic systems, servo systems, and industrial networking technologies.
