Description
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Senior Data & Technology Engineer to design, build, and maintain modern data, automation, integration, and technology solutions.
This is a hands-on senior engineering role that combines data engineering, Microsoft Fabric, Power Platform, corporate systems integration, and AI-augmented software development. The successful candidate will work with a high degree of autonomy while also providing technical guidance and mentoring to other engineers.
A key part of the role is the ability to use modern AI development tools effectively across the software development lifecycle — from solution design and development through testing, documentation, and ongoing improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Data Engineering & Microsoft Fabric
- Design, build, and maintain reliable and scalable data solutions using Microsoft Fabric.
- Develop and optimise data pipelines, transformations, and ETL processes.
- Apply strong data modelling principles and maintain well-structured, layered data architectures.
- Develop and improve reporting and semantic models.
- Ensure data solutions are accurate, governed, performant, maintainable, and fit for purpose.
- Take ownership of solutions from initial design through implementation and operational support.
Power Platform & Business Automation
- Design and develop business applications and workflow automations using Microsoft Power Apps and Power Automate.
- Work with stakeholders to understand business processes and translate requirements into effective technology solutions.
- Identify opportunities to automate manual and repetitive processes.
- Apply appropriate governance, environment management, solution management, and application lifecycle practices.
Corporate Systems & Integration
- Configure, develop, and integrate corporate SaaS applications.
- Build integrations between business applications using APIs, connectors, and automation platforms.
- Ensure reliable data movement between systems while minimising manual processes.
- Troubleshoot integration and application issues and continuously improve system configuration, documentation, and maintainability.
AI-Augmented Engineering
- Use AI assistants and AI development platforms throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Leverage tools such as Microsoft Copilot, Claude, Claude Code, Replit, or equivalent AI development technologies.
- Use AI to accelerate solution design, development, testing, documentation, and problem-solving.
- Apply sound engineering judgement when reviewing and validating AI-generated code and solutions.
- Establish and promote effective and responsible AI-assisted development practices.
- Help other engineers adopt AI tools and improve their productivity and delivery standards.
Technical Leadership & Engineering Practices
- Champion engineering best practices across development and delivery.
- Promote effective practices around version control, code reviews, testing, documentation, security, maintainability, and quality.
- Contribute to technical standards, reusable components, design patterns, and development practices.
- Make pragmatic technical decisions that balance delivery speed, quality, scalability, and maintainability.
- Provide technical mentoring and guidance to other engineers.
- Review technical work and support the professional development of team members.
- Take ownership of technical initiatives with limited supervision.
- Contribute to solution scoping, estimation, planning, and delivery.
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Work closely with technical and non-technical stakeholders to understand business requirements.
- Translate business needs into practical and sustainable technology solutions.
- Communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences.
- Maintain clear technical documentation to ensure solutions can be effectively supported and maintained.
- Provide operational support and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
Required Skills & Experience
- Demonstrated experience designing and building data engineering and integration solutions.
- Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft Fabric, Microsoft Power Platform, and/or the broader Azure data ecosystem.
- Strong understanding of data engineering fundamentals, including:
- Data modelling
- Data pipelines
- ETL/ELT
- SQL
- Semantic models
- Data governance
- Experience integrating SaaS or enterprise applications using APIs, connectors, and automation.
- Strong proficiency in using AI tools and AI-assisted development workflows.
- Strong understanding of modern software engineering practices.
- Proven ability to work independently and take ownership of technical outcomes.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Desirable Skills
- Experience providing technical leadership or mentoring other engineers.
- Experience within the Microsoft 365 ecosystem.
- Experience with modern cloud, data, and application development platforms.
- Programming or scripting experience using technologies such as:
- Python
- SQL
- DAX
- PowerShell
- Strong experience with API-based integrations.
- Understanding of data governance, security, privacy, and compliance.
- Relevant certifications in Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, Power Platform, or Azure.
Qualifications
A relevant tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or a related discipline is preferred.
Equivalent practical experience will also be considered.
What We're Looking For
The ideal candidate is a hands-on senior engineer who can operate across data, automation, integrations, and modern AI-assisted development.
You should be someone who:
- Takes ownership rather than waiting for direction.
- Can move comfortably between technical delivery and stakeholder discussions.
- Has strong engineering fundamentals.
- Is genuinely comfortable using AI as part of their everyday engineering workflow.
- Can identify opportunities to automate and improve existing processes.
- Enjoys mentoring and raising engineering standards across a team.
- Balances speed of delivery with quality, security, and long-term maintainability.
