SENIOR, SOFTWARE ENGINEER

About Team: 

Inventory & Merch Tech is the engineering backbone of Walmart's Inventory & Merchandising organization, spanning pricing, cost management, supplier, item, and inventory platforms that support 10,000+ stores and Walmart's global supply chain. Our team delivers a single, unified experience for Walmart’s supplier community across all channels, covering Tier 1 capabilities end to end. Our goal is to dramatically scale assortment while improving supplier efficiency. We operate with high autonomy, a strong engineering culture, and a bias toward clean, principle-based design over quick patches. 

What you'll do: 

• Own end-to-end design for full-stack features and services, from data model and API through to a production-quality front end. 

• Lead design and code reviews across teams setting the technical bar for quality and maintainability. 

• Build and maintain RESTful and event-driven services using Java/Spring Boot (or equivalent), integrated with SQL and NoSQL data stores and messaging systems such as Kafka. 

• Contribute across the stack, including front-end development using React (or equivalent), taking end-to-end ownership of requirements from design through delivery. 

• Work closely with architects and product management to translate ambiguous business problems into scalable technical solutions, balancing quality, cost, and delivery (QCD). 

• Engage with Product Management and Business to drive the agenda, set priorities, and deliver high-impact products. 

• Partner with engineering teams across geographies to share expertise and contribute to the broader technical community. 

• Coach and train engineers on the team, ensuring they are confident and effective with the tools and systems they own. 

• Proactively identify performance bottlenecks, reliability risks, and technical debt; propose and drive pragmatic fixes. 

• Analyze and test programs and products before launch to ensure flawless performance and troubleshoot production issues with rigor. 

• Champion software security by building safeguards around how information is handled and shared. 

• Deploy and operate services on cloud infrastructure (Azure/GCP) using CI/CD pipelines, containers, and infrastructure-as-code. 

• Adhere to company policies, procedures, mission, values, and standards of ethics and integrity. 

What you'll bring: 

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer science or related technical field with 6-8 years of full stack experience. 

• Strong computer science fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, and design patterns. 

• Proficiency in an object-oriented language such as Java, with hands-on Spring Boot experience. 

• Proficiency in front-end technologies such as React and Node.js. 

• Hands-on experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs and working with messaging/streaming platforms such as Kafka. 

• Working knowledge of both SQL and NoSQL data stores (e.g., PostgreSQL, Cassandra, MongoDB, Elasticsearch). 

• Experience with systems design and large-scale distributed systems, including scalability and fault tolerance. 

• Practical experience with cloud platforms (Azure or GCP) and CI/CD, containerization, and deployment tooling (Git, Maven, Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins, or equivalents). 

• Practitioner of Agile (Scrum) methodology, with excellent organization, communication, and interpersonal skills. 

• A track record of high ownership, clean coding practices, and a continuous drive to improve, automate, and optimize systems. 

Nice to have: 

• Hands-on experience building AI tools, including model integration, prompt/workflow design, and productionizing AI features. 

• Exposure to pricing, cost, sourcing, or supply-chain domains, or other high-scale, data-intensive retail/e-commerce systems. 

• Experience operating services at internet scale with strong observability, on-call, and incident-management practices. 

• Prior experience in building high volume low latency applications.
