Section/Unit Description

Fort Fisher began its development as a state historic site in 1960 after the state of North Carolina acquired the historic property. It was designated as North Carolina’s first National Historic Landmark in 1962. Fort Fisher was listed on the

National Register of Historic Places in 1966. A visitor center was built and opened to the public in 1965. Historically, Fort Fisher was the largest earthen fortification in the Confederacy and scene of the greatest naval bombardment of the Civil War. The fort was strategically located near the mouth of the Cape Fear River and protected the blockade running port of Wilmington until the fort’s capture in January 1865. During that three-day battle, several Union soldiers received the Medal of Honor and some of the war’s most famous soldiers were present. Fort Fisher was active during World War Two as well, being used as an anti-aircraft firing range.

The site consists of 361 acres (state owned or leased property from the US Army). A quarter mile trail, accessible to the physically challenged, surrounds the archaeological remains of the fort. Wayside exhibits, the reconstructed palisade fence and reconstructed gun emplacement enhance the educational experience. Heavy seacoast artillery demonstrations are given and the site has small arms weapons firing demonstrations. Guided tours are conducted daily. The site also provides support for the State Headquarters of the Underwater Archaeology Unit located on the property.
