A DAY IN THE LIFE
A readily available resource who provides leadership and develops other leaders mentoring and overall construction management direction in an assigned market segment or assigned projects. An enforcer of best practices, process utilization, quality, safety and risk management; and is a cultural manager by ensuring that the company’s fundamental values and beliefs are followed and maintained. Directors of Construction are responsible for building and organizing strategic client alliances to create a climate of mutual trust and respect.
The Director of Construction (DC) recognizes the importance of the three constituents: (1.) the success of our client, (2.) the success of our employees, and (3.) the success of the company.
STEP INTO THE ROLE
- At the onset of a client assigned to the DC, the DC assumes full responsibility of the client by building an outstanding relationship with the client to strengthen company’s marketable position. Regularly meets with clients to determine their needs and success metrics, how Blattner is doing to meet those needs and add value to the customer’s business.
- Control and monitor construction through the direction of project managers and on-site supervision to ensure they establish project objectives, policies, procedures and performance standards, confirming projects are built on schedule, within budget and within boundaries of corporate policy.
- Provide proactive and intentional leadership in developing the safety and quality programs and culture for project teams and projects themselves. The client quality and safety metrics program must be verified and attained by project managers.
- Ensures project managers manage the internal financial aspects of receivables, budget, positive cash flow, income/expenses, cost-to-completes, cost management report, etc. to protect company’s interest.
- Provide development of subordinate project managers and oversee the development of their subordinates, through performance evaluations (coaching and dashboard), mentoring, formal training, and planned exposure to diverse work experiences. Qualify candidates as possible successors to DC positions.
- Collaborate with general superintendents and peer DC’s, with the assistance of the Directors, on selection of project managers and site team to build a balanced team for a successful project. Manages functions including wage reviews, work assignments, bonus reviews, internal promotions, etc.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
- Four-year construction management, engineering or related degree.
- This position will have five or more years of directly relevant experience with large, complex mega projects, along with demonstrated skills or knowledge in construction techniques, estimating, construction management, financial management, construction design and administrative functions. The candidate will have proven experience in directly leading more than one project team simultaneously.
- Strong understanding of construction engineering and design concepts.
- Understanding of electrical construction and power delivery.
- Conceptual skills and ability to develop thorough work plans and management schedule.
- Knowledge of estimating strategies and techniques.
- Knowledge of construction contracts, construction regulations and cost control systems.
- Excellent written presentation and verbal communication skills.
- Strong leadership skills - ability to organize, utilize, and motivate team members quickly to respond to changes in the construction schedule.
- Conflict management skills required.
- Ability to strategically work within approved budget, conserves resources, and contributes to profits and revenue.
- Excellent organizational, supervisory and decision making/problem solving skills.
- Computer Skills required (Microsoft Office suite programs, Primavera, and CTC net).
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record required.
- Extensive travel required.
