Department Overview

The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at OHSU specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of digestive and liver diseases. Our physicians and advanced practice providers are nationally recognized leaders in education, research, and clinical care. As the only academic medical center in Oregon, we have a collaborative relationship with primary care and subspecialty providers across the state and Pacific Northwest

 

The Hepatology and Liver Transplant Program provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for a spectrum of liver diseases. Our nationally recognized hepatologists have been at the forefront of treatments for viral hepatitis, chronic liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma. They are now anticipating future challenges in the field and are developing multidisciplinary programs to diagnose and treat MASH (Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease). The transplant program has a long track record of success, with more than 1,000 patients transplanted since 1988 and with 80-90 liver transplants annually.

 

The full-time annual base salary range for this position is $390,000-$484,507; commensurate with experience and rank. Base pay does not include incentive pay, hiring bonuses, or additional benefits such as retirement contributions.

Function/Duties of Position

The Medical Director of Liver Transplant provides leadership for the OHSU liver transplant program in conjunction with the Surgical Director of Liver Transplant. 

 

This position is responsible for the collaborative leadership of the OHSU Liver Transplant Program in conjunction with the Surgical Director of Liver Transplant. Specific duties include (1) organization and improvement of the clinical effort to assess patients for liver transplant and lead the effort in listing appropriate patients for liver transplant, (2) management of the outpatient liver transplant clinic, (3) collaboration with nursing, social work, nutrition services, PAS scheduling, financial services, etc., to streamline and troubleshoot the transplantation process starting with referrals and going to long-term post-transplant outcomes, (4) leadership of routine transplant quality meetings and improvement projects, (5) liaison between OHSU liver transplant and the national transplant administration (OPTN/UNOS), (6) representation of OHSU at routine regional OPTN/UNOS meetings, and (7) assessment of program needs for communication to OHSU executive leadership.

 

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

By providing clinical input and physician leadership, the Medical Director of Liver Transplant works to provide the best care for patients needing and receiving liver transplants in the area OHSU serves. Specific activities include:

 

  • Scope of Clinical Services: Includes management of wide range of OHSU services, including Abdominal Transplant Surgery services, OR management, outpatient Liver Transplant clinics (both medical and surgical), and component resources including Liver Transplant Social Work, Nutrition, Transplant Infectious Diseases and Psychiatry.
  • Clinical Effectiveness: Facilitates development of program protocols, practice guidelines and other initiatives to improve delivery of evidence-based care; for all procedures and variations of procedures performed in the unit, ensures definition of and adherence to medical staff training, supervision, and proctoring requirements.
  • Clinical Efficiency: Works to reduce cost of care by leading efforts to eliminate unnecessary or duplicative equipment /supplies, developing and implementing protocols to streamline care and improve patient throughput, and collaborating with management to achieve optimal selection and pricing on equipment, supplies, etc.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Works with national Liver Transplant organization OPTN/UNOS to adhere to required national policies and meet national standards for Liver Transplant centers; works with hospital management to ensure compliance with relevant internal and external regulatory standards and policies including but not limited to: OHSU Hospitals policies and procedures; federal and state laws; and OSHA, and JCAHO standards.
  • Communication: Facilitates communication between medical staff and others on the clinical unit including hospital staff and patients.
  • Business Development: Works with unit administrators to define and develop new business opportunities.
  • Budget Development: Works with unit manager to develop operating and capital budgets and advocates for needs of the clinical unit.
  • Quality Control: Oversees quality of services provided to ensure high clinical standards.

Required Qualifications

  • MD/DO
  • Board certified in gastroenterology and subspecialty of transplant hepatology
  • Eligibility for OR state licensure
  • Experience working as transplant hepatologist
