Expert System Engineer (AI & Advanced Process Control) (f/m)
Location: Poland, Wrocław
Your Role
As an Expert System Engineer (AI & Advanced Process Control), you will develop, maintain and deploy advanced expert systems that optimize kiln and grinding processes. Working closely with plant teams, process experts and technology providers, you will help accelerate automation and implement next-generation digital solutions across Heidelberg Materials operations worldwide.
Your Responsibilities
- Maintain and continuously improve expert systems for kiln and grinding process optimization.
- Develop and implement advanced control strategies, including AI/ML-based solutions.
- Integrate soft sensors, process models and mass/heat balance calculations into control applications.
- Ensure reliable integration with DCS, PLC and data platforms using OPC and other communication protocols.
- Provide remote support for incidents, alarms and customer tickets to ensure high system availability.
- Fine-tune MPC, Fuzzy Logic and PID controllers to sustain operational improvements.
- Deliver training and technical guidance to operators and plant personnel.
- Troubleshoot communication and integration issues between APC solutions and plant control systems.
- Maintain accurate technical documentation and site-specific procedures.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders, Global Competence Centers and external technology providers.
Required Qualifications
- University degree in Automation Engineering, Process Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related technical field.
- 3-8 years of professional experience in Advanced Process Control, industrial automation or expert systems.
- Solid understanding of process control principles and industrial automation.
- Experience with industrial computing, networking and OPC/ODBC/SQL communications.
- Experience working with DCS and/or PLC systems.
- Exposure to implementation, commissioning or maintenance of APC solutions.
- Good command of English, both written and spoken.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively in an international and multidisciplinary environment.
Nice to Have
- Knowledge of Python programming.
- Experience with machine learning and AI applications in industrial environments.
- Understanding of cement manufacturing processes or heavy industry operations.
- Experience with Model Predictive Control (MPC) solutions.
