  • Influence leaders, shape safety culture, and drive continuous improvement through coaching, investigations and risk management initiatives.
  • Enjoy a permanent Monday to Friday role in Kitimat, BC, with relocation assistance available and access to an exceptional outdoor lifestyle.

We’re Finding Better Ways™ to provide materials the world needs, now and in the future. Our values – care, courage and curiosity – guide how we work and how we treat each other.

About the role

We are looking for a Safety Specialist to help our operations team strengthen safety performance and deliver sustainable risk reduction outcomes at our aluminium smelter in Kitimat, British Columbia. In this role, you will contribute to a safer, more resilient workplace by partnering with leaders and employees to monitor trends, investigate incidents, support audits and embed effective safety practices across site operations.

This is a great opportunity for someone who is passionate about workplace safety, enjoys influencing positive change and wants to make a meaningful impact in a safety-critical industrial environment.

While we don’t offer fly-in-fly-out arrangements, we do offer domestic relocation assistance, to help you settle in and thrive. Join us and become an integral part of our vibrant community. Located on British Columbia, Canada's northwest coast, Kitimat is a welcoming, family‑friendly community set between the mountains and the sea. Known for its strong local economy, modern amenities, short commutes, and endless opportunities for outdoor adventure, it’s an ideal place to build both a career and a life.

What you’ll be doing

Reporting to the Superintendent Safety, you will:

  • Support site-wide risk reduction initiatives and coaching frontline leaders on safety tools including risk assessments, change management and safety interactions.
  • Review safety risks associated with equipment, process and practice changes, and recommend improvements aligned with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
  • Monitor incident trends and identify opportunities to proactively improve safety performance.
  • Lead or facilitate investigations into high-potential incidents using root cause analysis methodologies to identify sustainable corrective actions.
  • Provide technical support for internal and external audits and help maintain compliance with corporate and regulatory safety requirements.
  • Coach operational leaders on the implementation of corporate safety programs and sharing key learnings across teams.
  • Build capability across the workforce by promoting accountability, collaboration and continuous learning in safety.
  • Partner with stakeholders across operations to strengthen safety culture and improve risk awareness.

About you

We’re looking for someone whose experience aligns with the key requirements below. You do not need to meet every “helpful for success” item to apply — if you bring relevant experience and are excited by the opportunity, we encourage you to submit an application.

Required for Success

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team.
  • Ability to coach leaders, analyse safety data, support audits and implement health, safety and environment initiatives in an operational environment.
  • Experience supporting health and safety programs within a large-scale industrial, manufacturing, processing, mining or heavy industrial workplace.
  • Qualification in health, safety or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of practical experience and training.
  • Working knowledge of safety management systems, risk assessment processes, change management practices and incident investigation methodologies.
  • Understanding of applicable health and safety legislation, standards and compliance requirements.

Helpful for Success

  • Experience supporting incident investigations using methodologies such as Essential Factors, TapRooT or similar root cause analysis frameworks.
  • Experience conducting internal audits and supporting policy review and implementation activities.

Applications close on Monday the 14th of September 2026 (Rio Tinto reserves the right to remove advertised roles prior to this date).
