Position Summary

The Senior Manager, Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) - US & Canada leads HSE strategy and operations across multiple businesses and manufacturing sites. Reporting to the Global HSE Director, this role partners with business, regional and plant leaders to manage compliance, risk, business continuity, loss prevention, sustainability and HSE systems. The position guides site HSE leaders, ensures consistent global standards and builds regional capability toward world-class performance.


Primary Responsibilities

• Lead HSE strategy and execution across US and Canadian businesses, aligning global priorities with local operations and risks.

• Serve as the primary HSE partner to business, regional and plant leaders while maintaining consistent corporate standards, governance and performance expectations.

• Advise leaders on legal compliance, risk, loss prevention, business continuity and sustainable HSE performance.

• Build an effective regional HSE organization with appropriate resources, skills, clear roles and cross-functional collaboration.

• Provide functional direction, coaching and support to plant HSE leaders and strengthen regional and global HSE teamwork.

• Monitor and communicate federal, state, provincial and local HSE requirements and industry guidance; coordinate implementation of changes.

• Improve HSE programs, culture and management systems in line with corporate, customer and recognized standards.

• Analyze performance, trends and significant or recurring risks; recommend KPIs, priorities and corrective actions.

• Oversee compliance assessments and audits, ensuring gaps are documented, escalated and corrected.

• Support permits, licenses and authorizations for current operations, expansions and restructuring.

• Support environmental assessments, contamination response and remediation when plants close so properties can be transferred in an environmentally manageable condition.

• Coordinate relationships, documentation, surveys and responses with regulators, government agencies, insurers and loss-control representatives; evaluate findings and assign appropriate follow-up.

• Reduce fire risk through prevention controls, emergency preparedness, facility readiness and timely action on insurer and loss-control recommendations.

• Ensure job hazard and risk assessments are used for routine and non-routine work and that controls address identified risks.

• Oversee investigation, reporting and analysis of incidents, injuries, illnesses, environmental events and hazards; ensure corrective action and shared learning.

• Lead regional HSE capital planning and tracking, including project development, capital requests and risk-based prioritization.

• Review major projects, process changes and engineering modifications for HSE risks and ensure use of project-review and change-management processes.

• Coordinate regional internal and external HSE management-system audits.

• Ensure accurate and timely HSE measurement and reporting for legal, corporate and customer requirements.

• Develop HSE training, awareness and competency programs for leaders, HSE professionals and front-line employees.

• Lead cross-functional compliance, risk-reduction, remediation, abatement, ergonomics, energy and sustainability initiatives.

• Partner with Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, HR, Quality, Legal, Finance and other functions to integrate HSE requirements into business processes.

• Benchmark results, standardize practices and share effective methods across the region and global HSE organization.

• Model safe and ethical conduct and perform other duties aligned with the role.

• May, on occasion, be required to perform duties other than those specified in this description


Education and Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, engineering, environmental science, chemistry, industrial hygiene or a related field required; advanced degree preferred.

• 10+ years of progressive manufacturing HSE experience, including HSE management and multi-site leadership.

• Professional HSE certification preferred; ability to obtain required certifications expected.

• Strong knowledge of US and Canadian HSE laws, regulations, permitting and compliance practices.

• Experience with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 systems and audits; ISO 50001 knowledge is a plus.

• Experience with HSE metrics and KPIs, compliance action plans, incident investigations, audits and capital planning.

• Ability to work effectively in a multinational matrix organization at all levels, from executives to the manufacturing floor.

• Ability to explain complex technical and regulatory topics clearly in writing and verbally.

• Fluent English required.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant HSE information and reporting systems.

Work Environment / Work Conditions

• Works in office and manufacturing environments.

• Must wear required personal protective equipment in manufacturing and designated areas.

• Frequent travel within the United States and Canada; international travel may be required.

• Must complete required training and follow all safety rules for equipment and site access.
