Role summary:As a Principal Software Engineer, you will lead the design and delivery of scalable platform capabilities, driving technical excellence across multiple teams. This role involves architecting cloud-native, distributed systems with AI/ML integration, ensuring high availability and performance. You will provide strategic technical guidance, mentor engineers, and collaborate with stakeholders to translate complex business needs into effective solutions. About the team:
The Associate AI Platform team develops the next generation of intelligent experiences for Walmart associates by building an enterprise-scale AI platform that enhances productivity, decision-making, and access to knowledge. Operating at the intersection of AI, distributed systems, developer platforms, and product engineering, we address complex challenges in agent orchestration, tool execution, personalization, and responsible AI. The systems serve over two million associates across stores, clubs, campuses, and international markets. As a Principal Software Engineer, you will influence the architecture and technical direction of a platform redefining AI usage within one of the world’s largest enterprises.
What you'll do:
- Lead platform engineering efforts by delivering scalable infrastructure, reusable tooling, and cloud-native architectures aligned with strategic roadmaps.
- Drive full software development lifecycle activities including design, coding, testing, deployment, and maintenance across multiple teams.
- Architect and implement AI-enhanced applications and intelligent systems supporting millions of users.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship, influencing architectural decisions and promoting engineering best practices.
- Collaborate with cross-functional partners to translate business needs into actionable technical requirements and measurable outcomes.
- Foster continuous improvement through innovation, knowledge sharing, and adoption of emerging technologies.
- Ensure high system availability, reliability, and performance through sound technical judgment and proactive issue resolution.
What you'll bring:
- Extensive experience leading platform engineering initiatives, delivering scalable, cloud-native architectures and reusable tooling.
- Proven expertise in designing and implementing distributed systems optimized for real-time data processing and AI/ML integration.
- Strong proficiency in software development lifecycle management, including CI/CD pipelines, testing, monitoring, and incident response.
- Demonstrated ability to apply model-driven design and leverage AI agents for enhanced software solutions.
- Skilled in mentoring engineering teams and influencing architectural decisions to promote maintainability and interoperability.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills with cross-functional stakeholders to define technical requirements and measure success.

Sunnyvale, California US-11658: The annual salary range for this position is $143,000.00 - $286,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :
