Description
Worker Type:
PermanentHere at BNZ, it's about more than just banking. We work together in an agile, energising environment to create innovative solutions through our promise "If you can imagine a better future, let's find a way."
We support wellbeing, flexible working and have a generous leave offering. There is the opportunity for growth, learning and career development. No two days are the same.
Help build the AI platforms, products, and engineering practices that will shape how BNZ uses AI.
At Bank of New Zealand, we are transforming how AI is designed, built, and scaled across the organisation. We are looking for a Senior Technical Specialist to help build the products, platforms, integrations, and engineering practices that make enterprise AI safe, useful, and scalable.
Mō te Tūranga | About the Role
This is a hands-on engineering role for people who want to help shape how enterprise AI is built in a regulated environment. You will work across AI product delivery and shared platform capability, building reusable components, integrations, patterns, and guardrails that help teams deliver AI safely and effectively.
What's exciting about this opportunity?
This role offers the chance to shape how AI is engineered and adopted across BNZ. You will work on practical technical problems, contribute to foundational AI capability, and deliver products, integrations, and platform components that create value across the organisation. There is real scope to influence how we build, scale, and embed AI in a way that is practical, safe, and sustainable.
What do we want you to know before you apply?
You will join a team that designs, builds, and operates AI capability end-to-end. That includes AI-powered products and APIs, agentic solutions, enterprise integrations, shared platform services, MCP servers, gateways, reusable tooling, and the engineering patterns and guardrails that help AI be adopted safely and effectively across the bank.
As a Senior Technical Specialist in the AI domain, you will be hands-on: shipping AI-enabled products, building shared platform capability, improving reusable engineering patterns, and helping domain teams adopt those patterns. You will work closely with architects, engineers, and product teams, moving between delivery and core platform engineering depending on where your skills can create the most value.
What will success look like?
Success in this role is defined by ownership, delivery, and learning. You will move problems forward, turn ideas into working capabilities, collaborate generously, share knowledge, and keep improving how AI is engineered and adopted across BNZ.
What tech skills would add value for the AI team?
This is an opportunity for an experienced engineer with excellent stakeholder management skills, sound judgement, and adaptability. You don't need to tick every box from day one; curiosity, engineering discipline, and a willingness to grow with AI capability are essential.
We are interested in capable engineers who can learn quickly, work well with others, and bring disciplined engineering practices to emerging AI technology.
We are interested in experience across some of the following areas:
Strong hands-on experience with Python and/or TypeScript, including modern frameworks, back-end services, and APIs.
Experience building AI-powered solutions, such as agents, orchestration, retrieval-augmented generation, LLM-backed services, or AI-enabled product experiences.
Experience building, onboarding, or operating shared technical capabilities, such as enterprise integrations, cloud services, agent platforms, MCP servers, gateways, or reusable tooling.
Working knowledge of secure, production-ready delivery in regulated environments, including observability, operability, identity, and access controls.
Experience with governance and guardrails development, such as platform standards, environment management, policy controls, evaluation approaches, and guardrail frameworks that enable safe development.
Experience creating reusable libraries, SDKs, templates, and reference implementations that help other engineers build effectively.
Why BNZ?
You will be working on AI capability with real enterprise scale, meaningful customer and colleague impact, and the complexity of a regulated banking environment. This is your chance to apply modern AI engineering in a setting where safety, reliability, and trust matter.
What attributes will this person display in order to be successful in this role?
You’ll bring sound judgement, strong communication, and a commitment to helping others grow.
