  • Deliver hands-on support for research operations, teaching activities, and outreach demonstrations

  • Base Salary HEO6 $107,312 p.a. + 17% superannuation

About the opportunity

The University of Sydney is welcoming applications for motivated and experienced Technical Officer to join the Central Operational Services (COS)- Engineering Delivery team and provide high-quality technical services within the designated area of responsibility to strengthen and enhance education and research support outcomes.

Working collaboratively with academic, teaching, research, and technical staff, the Technical Officer will provide hands-on support for practical classes, demonstrations, teaching activities, and research programs. The role will also be responsible for maintaining equipment, facilities, and work areas to ensure they are safe, operational, and fit for purpose, while providing technical advice and guidance to academic staff, teaching staff, researchers, and other facility users.

The Technical Officer will involve sourcing, preparing, and maintaining consumables, materials, and other resources required to support teaching and research activities, as well as contributing to the development and maintenance of safety, operational, and procedural documentation.

The ideal candidate will have a broad background/knowledge and hands-on experience in electronics, electrical engineering, and communications, as well as demonstrated ability to support both teaching and research activities in laboratory environment.

This is an onsite position, with the successful candidate required to work on campus daily to support the operational, teaching, and research activities of the work area.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • deliver technical support and services in accordance with the role and tailor services to user/client requirements within remit and escalate service gaps/feedback as appropriate

  • support the effective utilisation of resources within the designated area of responsibility, ensuring that the work area’s education/research requirements are effectively met

  • lead by example by demonstrating a strong adherence to established WHS and compliance procedures, and maintain professionalism in all customer-facing activities and communications

  • support teaching operations and deliver training to facility users in the safe operation of equipment, building inductions, and general laboratory procedures

  • contribute to a positive, professional and customer focused team culture

  • collaborate with other technical support teams across the university and support the operations of projects managed centrally as required.

About you

  • bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or in a related field or relevant training and experience

  • demonstrated knowledge in analogue/digital electronics and at least one of the following areas: telecommunications, power systems or photonics

  • experience in supporting the lab teaching in electrical/electronics and communications engineering, including the software involved in, i.e. MATLAB / Simulink, C/C++, LTSpice, Arduino etc.

  • significant and relevant experience in managing/supporting/developing practical classes, along with experience in troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining circuits/equipment

  • experience engaging with external parties or contractors to coordinate repair or procurement of equipment to maintain teaching requirements

  • understanding of and ability to implement successfully WHS policies and guidelines

  • demonstrated experience implementing safety requirements within a laboratory environment.
