Position Summary
The Application Engineer develops technical building-automation solutions that translate customer requirements, drawings, specifications, and sequences of operation into coordinated controls designs, submittals, bills of material, programming requirements, and execution plans. This position reports to the Senior Controls Manager.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Receives project specifications from sales team and designs building automation system and service installed jobs.
Choosing the appropriate mix of products and installation methods to provide the most cost-effective solution in support of the Design Engineer.
Act as a technical resource to team and customer as needed.
Participate in sales to operations turnover meetings to evaluate accuracy of the sales estimate and job layout.
May participate in initial job site walk through with contractors and/or building management.
Independently programs building automation systems for new construction, renovating/retrofit projects and service.
May need to create unique design solutions to meet specific customer requirements.
Program building automation systems for large, and/or unique buildings consisting of a provided mechanical system layout, electrical drawing, bill of material, sequence of operation, valve and damper schedules, DDC panel layouts to meet the intent of the project plans, specifications and contract documents.
Designs large complex building automation network architectures to support operator workstations, DDC field panels, third-party integration devices connected through LON, Ethernet, BACNET, or other protocols.
Generates DDC point databases on all projects through controllers, integration, etc.
Creates programming code for field controllers based on project design documents.
Provides start-up and checkout documentation to the Project Manager and field technicians for use in commissioning and validation.
Oversees or completes the creation of workstation builds and system graphics.
May perform some field activities as required.
Required Qualifications
At least 3 years of building automation, HVAC controls, mechanical design, electrical controls, or related application-engineering experience.
Working knowledge of commercial HVAC equipment, sequences of operation, controls devices, and networked building systems.
Ability to read mechanical and electrical plans, specifications, wiring diagrams, and equipment submittals.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and controls design, estimating, drafting, or submittal software.
Strong technical writing, organization, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's or associate degree in mechanical, electrical, controls, or architectural engineering technology.
Experience with BACnet, Niagara, Tridium, Honeywell, Distech, Johnson Controls, Siemens, PLC or similar platforms.
Experience with Visio, Bluebeam, or control-estimating tools.
Relevant manufacturer, networking, cybersecurity, or engineering credential.

Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office with regular visits to active construction sites, customer facilities, shops, or meetings. Site visits may require walking uneven surfaces, using stairs, wearing required PPE, and exposure to weather, noise, dust, and moving equipment. Local travel and schedule flexibility are required based on project needs.
