About the Department

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has 114 clinical providers, providing care at the main hospital in Hyde Park and seven off site locations. We have more than 60,000 outpatient visits, 25,000 ultrasound visits, 2,800 deliveries, and 3,000 gynecological surgeries per year. Teaching, research and the highest quality clinical care are top priorities for the Department. The residency and fellowship programs are highly ranked and have a history of training leaders in healthcare. The Department also has a significant research enterprise, engaging in population health studies, as well as research conducted in wet laboratories on tumor biology, fibroid research, and hypertensive diseases in pregnancy.


Job Summary

The job uses best practices and knowledge of patients and exercises autonomous decision making in the assessment, diagnosis and initiation of delegated medical treatments. The scope of practice includes family support, discharge planning, staff education, consultation and research.

The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology is looking for a skilled and highly motivated candidate to support our gynecology physicians at our Flossmoor, IL and Northwest Indiana - Crown Point locations. This position would entail physician support, running independent ambulatory clinics, and performing outpatient procedures where applicable. This position will perform duties as an APP who is qualified to evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients under the scope of supervising and/or alternating supervising physicians. Services provided in our sections for patients include well woman care, problem visits, post-operative care, and diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Services are provided with available consultation from attending physicians and in collaboration with medical trainees. The supervising physician or the alternate physician maintains final responsibility for the care of the patient and the performance of the APP.

Responsibilities

  • Independently sees patients in Hyde Park and offsite clinics, administers, orders, and interprets diagnostic tests, such as ultrasounds, CT scans, and laboratory tests.

  • Examines patients to obtain information about their physical condition.

  • Instructs and counsels patients about prescribed therapeutic regimens, emotional problems of daily living, and health maintenance.

  • Administers or orders diagnostic tests, such as x-ray, electrocardiograms, ultrasounds, and laboratory tests.

  • Interprets diagnostic test results for deviations from normal.

  • Diagnoses and makes decisions about the management and treatment of patients.

  • Obtains, compiles, and records patient medical data, including health history, progress notes, and results of physical examination.

  • Performs therapeutic procedures, such as injections, immunizations, suturing and wound care, and infection management.

  • Prescribes therapy or medication.

  • Performs biopsies and contraceptive procedures.

  • Visits and observes patients on hospital rounds or house calls, updating charts, ordering therapy, and reporting back to the physician.

  • May order medical and laboratory supplies and equipment.

  • Designs patient education programs that include information required to make informed health care and treatment decisions.

  • Evaluates goals and outcomes taking into account the benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family and the organization.

  • Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient’s plan of care.

  • Has a deep understanding and response to adverse drug reactions, with special attention to vulnerable populations such as infants, children, pregnant and lactating women, or older adults. Develops and coordinates APP training and professional development activities.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college.


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline.


Certifications:

Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required. Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO). - State of Illinois

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Advanced nursing degree from an accredited school/college of nursing.

  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc.

Licenses and Certifications for Advanced Practice Nurse:

  • Current Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.

Licenses and Certifications for Physician Assistant:

  • Current Physician Assistant license/registration in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.

  • Certification from the National Commission for the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) by start date.

Preferred Competencies

  • Demonstrated clinical competency with effective leadership and teaching skills.

  • Ability to conduct physical examinations and perform health assessments.

  • Ability to interview patients and obtain accurate medical information.

  • Ability to provide direct patient care in a professional, respectful, and compassionate manner.

  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology and clinical practices.

  • Ability to perform detailed work and manage multiple concurrent tasks, including with occasional interruptions.

  • Ability to act as a resource for colleagues and participate in teaching and mentorship.

  • Strong analytical skills to assess situations and implement solutions efficiently.

  • Willingness to meet Professional Requirements and Compliance.

  • Willingness to enter into a written collaborative agreement with a collaborating physician upon hire.

  • Once licensed and as needed, willingness to apply for a controlled substance license and DEA number.

  • Willingness to be privileged and credentialed through the University of Chicago Medical Staff Office prior to start date.

Working Conditions

  • Clinical setting.

  • Requires standing, walking, and occasional lifting during patient assessments, procedures, and operating room assistance.

  • May require participation in on-call or after-hours coverage depending on clinical service needs.

  • Regular use of computers, electronic health records, and other medical equipment for documentation and patient care.

  • Travel to offsite clinics as needed.
